If you've seen Unreal 2 and UT2K3, you might see some of that difference; they use the same engine, but Unreal 2's graphics look MUCH better. Why? Because it's single-player, so they can get away with more. In the case of Doom 3, they designed the entire engine around that principle, which is why graphically it's going to blow everything else out of the water. There are already plenty of deathmatch games out there - id wanted to make something different.
For reference on "sharpness" of TV vs. PC - an NTSC signal carries information at 720x486 pixels, which means that the vast majority of TVs don't support any higher resolution than that. By contrast, standard PC resolution is 800x600 nowadays, and that's considered bottom of the bucket - most systems can pretty easily support 1280x1024 or even 1600x1200 if desired. That's more than four times the area. (I won't even go into antialiasing or lack thereof.)

Let do a comparison and see how the graphics stack up between Halo and NS. I'll compare these few screens, and maybe people can post more. Now honestly, which do you think looks better? Our tired dated HL engine, or this slick greased new x-box powered halo art with a 50 million dollar budget and 30 dedicated staffers?
Yes They are really using half-life, Although they did tweak it a little for the particle system, Pretty amasing huh? just think, the people who made NS look like it does from what HL used to look like are the same ones who are STILL working on it, I say were lucky.
Since you chose some poor screenshots to represent HALO I found a few better ones. Thanks for the reply, SamWise...I figured as much, yes. How wierd is it to even consider a T1 being standard internet connection in the future, just so something like Doom 3 can be massivly m-p.
As to Kharaa_0z, I can't freaking BELIVE that's Quake 1. MonsieurEvil, you have to admit you might be a little biased, on the team and all. It's really not even applicable to compare Natural Selection graphicly with something like Halo. They're so diffrent it's almost Apples and Oranges. Graphicly, it's no contest, but the details are what counts. I mean, look at the Halo aliens. One and all, they are for the most part fairly....hmm. The word I'm looking for here is Simple. Sure, you can look at the sky, pick out a star, then turn around and pick that exact same star out from the sky reflection on the shoulder of one of Halos aliens, but Natural Selection aliens simply have more personality. My personal belief the skulk could have had a better design aside, where has anyone ever seen anything that looks /remotly/ like an Onos? And take the Fade, a fairly old concept(middle power level humanoid locomotion alien) and NO alien I'eve ever seen as a THING on it's shoulder that's apperntly a seppereate life-form that spits /acid bombs/. You can't compare number of pixels, MOnsieur, but where you guys come off as the champions of all time is Orignality. Halo is an fps. A freaking good one, but just an FPS, that I gave probably around 80 hours total. The NS team made Natural Selection, an rts/fps that I give 80 hours to roughly every 2 and a half weeks. Until NS starts using the Doom 3 or Unlreal II engines, comparing exact graphics is just window shopping.
It's the game that matters. Allways has, allways will. Unless Doom 3 has co-op, I plan on giving it perhaps 3 replays, and that's one more than normal for shooters in my line up. With co-op? Perhaps 5 times. I will, however, /still/ be playing Natural Selection.

Still, take into consideration what MonsE said. NS was made for non-profit. The team, as far as I know, did not get paid a single cent for making this mod. Now, when you think that something like this could be made without paying people to do it, it's just...phenomenal. Graphics this advanced and a particle system on a 4-year old engine? That's quite a feat. Compared to a game with an original engine and a paid team of graphics designers, well, I think NS has proven something. You don't need to be paid to make an amazing game.

I'm sure that by the time anyone feels the need to do an NS port (years from now), a next-generation multiplayer FPS engine will be out and ready for the task. I actually wouldn't trust the task to any other multiplayer game out there, just because none of them seems to have netcode that rocks like Half-Life's does. Half-Life is the only game I've played where you can play over a lag-spiking connection and still hit what you aim at, run where you think you're running, et cetera. The worst counterexample is the Serious Engine, which will have you constantly jumping back in time because the server suddenly decided not to honor the movement you'd made on the client, but I've seen the same behavior to a lesser degree in UT2K3, BF1942, and even Q3.

I think that was uncalled for Eliotmat.
Who among us isn't biased? "Let the one...."
Come back with reasons to why he is wrong instead.

Sure I might only play through Doom 3 a few times, but I plan on jumping on those mod tools like a skulk on a marine with an empty clip. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> Even with a 4-player limit, there's a lot of fun stuff you could do with an engine like that. (That's where games like Halo really fall down IMO - no modding, limited fun.)
