Spleen.....filling.......

can't....contain........it.....

must......vent........uuuhhhhh

Normally I'm the type of guy that just plays games
for laughs. I usually ignore all the *****ing and
chatter and just get on with it. But I've seen so
much of this lately and it's got to me...

<urge to vent fading...>

The sort of player I'm beginning to dislike having
around isn't the newbie (who I have no problem
with whatsoever). Nor is it the so-called noob, i.e.
someone who plays other games like CS and is good at them,
joins NS and proceeds to play in the same way. No, it's
neither of these.

<urge to vent fading...>

It's the player that KNOWS how to play NS, has probably
been around and played for a while and spends the whole
game banging on about how great they are and if :

"you'd have backed me up we would have killed them all"

or if :

"you'd have given me a JP and HMG I would have got those
hives"

or if :

"you'd all listened to me and done what I said we would
have won"

and how everyone else :

"sucks at this game"

<urge to vent rising...>

Aarrggghh! Shut up! Shut up you annoying little git. You
don't understand that everyone else thinks you're a ****. And
really, you're not that good. It's a team game, and no matter
how good one individual is it doesn't matter.

The problem is, you don't recognise yourself so me writing this
is no good whatsoever. You're probably reading this now thinking
"yeah, I know what you mean..". Of course you do! It's you! It's
you you Neanderthal. It's you and your stupid "everyone listen to
me and do what I do, I am the best, why don't marines have a score
so I can show off, what do u mean weld you? what's a welder.." attitude.
With your ignorance of what the commander wants to do, wants YOU to do!!

<urge to vent fading...>

Sorry for all the good players out there that come, play the game
and go having had a fun time. Sorry for wasting your time with this drivel.
The people I'm after haven't read this anyway <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> And even if they did I'm
sure they think they have a valid argument. Meh.

I'm not a good player and I'm not jealous of those that are.
There are some very good players that don't harp on about what they've
done or what they WOULD have done if only.... and certainly don't abuse
other team members. I just want that other type to have a bit of consideration and stop insulting others.

<urge to vent gone...>

Hmmm. Did I really write that? That's not like me at all.

<Bob packs up soap box and wanders off>

Ah well, back to the game...

    Lenny: We made it! And it's all thanks to teamwork.

    Carl: Yeah <i>my</i> teamwork.

    So many Carls in NS.

    Dodgy, you just made my 'Cool guy of the Week' list. Excellent post and I couldn't agree more. I hope these people don't lose sight of the fact that NS is a <b>GAME</b>, and that it doesn't exist to stroke their egos or have them lord of others. Well spoken.

    It has struck my head that 90% of people think that they are smarter than 90% of people. I try to preach what I practice, but it's hard. I always try to keep a thumb rule of not being too angry to any type of player (rambo etc.) so I can always conceal myself in the veil of stupidity when I notice that I'm a rambo too... Applies to all player types: a very good strategy indeed.
  • golden_eyegolden_eye Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 3425Members
    Yeah, playing with people who think they know everything is kinda tiring. They always have some excuse for, "if you had only doen this, I woulda been able to kill all 3 hives by myself!" I admit, I may think like that at times, but I try not to **** people off by accusing them of crap like that, if I die, then I die. I feel I'm the type of player who just follows orders to the best of my ability, and if something goes wrong, it goes wrong.

    I had a little embarrasing episode along these lines earlier. I've just started using voicecomm, and had my mouse button bound to it. When I hopped into command and started giving orders and shouting and stuff no one listened. At one point I left the server for being so angry with my team. I thought they were just being morons, but later I found out mouse buttons don't work for voicecomm as commander and I felt really dumb. I guess the moral of the story is that it pays to have a cool head when dealing with people you think are "morons" in game.

    That was one of the best mature vents I've seen here in a while <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> , no comments on peoples sexual preference, no attacks on their mother or any of the other standard crap that I've come to expect from people venting. Nice job.

    P.S. that Lenny and Carl post was perfect, so many Carls running around these days. I don't know what phrase I've heard more while playing "crap, 3 hives" or "You guys suck, give me a JP/hmg and I'll take down all their hives easy"

    I have to honestly say (and when I say that I mean I have the guts to come out with it) that I am like that often, bragging about how I carried the team, or miraculously won against all odds. I have to say though, I usually feel justified in doing so, when I do something like take command and win after 3 hives, or in addition to having the most kills and the best kill ratio, I built the first have and all of the upgrade chambers, while still clearing out the third hive.

    And the only thing besides being a dumb gorge/commander that my teammates can do to harm the team (or me) is f4ing. No one should be surprised if their teammates (or opponents) are complaining about going to the RR. But for the most part, I believe that, if you want something done right, do it your self, so I exclusively rely on myself, and my team mates are not to be blamed for me failing.

    And I also odn't claim to know everything, I am learning new strategies and hidden spots for custom maps every day.

    Thanks for all the replies, I thought after that I might have been being a bit too touchy.

    Pege and Golden Eye - absolutely spot on. The thing that annoys me most is when "they" abuse other players. Not everyone is the best player ever. Most people make mistakes. I would never dare insult other players as I realise I'm not perfect and make soooooo many mistakes.

    Infected marine - if you brag about something because you actually did it then that wouldn't bother me, you'd get my usual reaction - i.e. ignored. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> There's nothing wrong with bragging, I often do it with my mates on a LAN night or even to my sons with the usual chant of "who's your daddy?" <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->. All in fun of course.

    But I would never, seriously, abuse other players because they are worse than me or shout from the roof tops how if they listened to me and did what I said we'd win, etc. That's the whole crux of it, most of the players that do it aren't in any position to do it, they just don't stop and think. Meh.

    RandomEngy - I suppose you've highlighted something there. I didn't really consider that certain people would get so emotional about it. So it really mattered if you win or lose. I've always played for fun (I do like to win though <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->).
    I suppose my laid back attitude may annoy other players.

    Lenny and Carl - that's good. There's no I in team. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Anyway, that's far too much of that - I have some marines to chew on.....

    The whole thing's a fundamental problem of humanity. The overwhelming need to prove that you are somehow better that the rest of the world. And people often pick completly arbitrary measurments to gauge this by. As in:

    Rich vs. Poor
    Black vs. White
    Believer vs. Infidel
    G a y vs. Straight
    Dork vs. Cool
    and so on...

    These paticular people have just chosen:
    Vet vs. N00b as thier barometer of human worth.

    I guess some people feel that they have something to prove, maybe its because they'r a failure in real life, ie. their wife or girlfriend left them, they can't get a job, they got no friends, etc, so I suppose that when they play NS, they feel that they can be someone important?

    Just my 2 cents of pop psychology...
  • TorgoTorgo Join Date: 2002-12-30 Member: 11626Members
    ...but you gotta face the fact that these people bent on proving they are always right are never going to listen because...they think they're always right, so the best thing to do is ignore them, that's why God (HL/NS) developers put mute in the game. (By the way, is mute going to be put into 1.1 so that you don't have to "toggleedittps" everytime you want someone to shut their pieholes?"

    Props to someone finally getting around and saying it. So sick of the bragging egotistical player who thinks they're the best thing to happen to whichever team they're on.

    If i'm on marines, i'll listen to the commander, if i'm on Kharaa, i'll listen to the gorge and to the highest scoring player. Everyone else can just shut their mouths and follow orders.

    I never abuse players.

    But I am often the one suggesting.

    And it *IS* true that one player can make a difference ^^
    A quick example is a good comm.

    I have experienced such abuse and yeah it's annoying but I find it to be very rare ..

    I think what I am trying to say is there are quite a few teams that *DO* need massive inputs of experience, and the phenomenon of the clueless team happens to me much more often than the abusive hero.

    Of course n00biness has been expounded upon in other threads and I can let it go.

    Also understand that some of the ranting is legitimate, for instance I blocked this clanner once and I knew it too ^^ thus causing his death. It was not intentional but I was lazy and we all know how quick death comes.

    Well it's kinda sad when you've got a whole team being munched by 1-2 skulks. Sometimes this game is damn frustrating when you play with people you haven't played with before, and most people don't mean it when they say crap like that.

    Heh.. I love the Fades that come into a game and start screaming about a 'n00b gorge', just as the third Hive comes up.

    And for those guys who stand around in base as Marines, complaining that they want a heavier gun, or to JP rush, or ANYTHING complaining about the Comm... three words:
    long rubber glove.

    I veer dramatically from one extreme to the other.

    I'm either "hey, cut the guy some slack"

    or

    "OMG, why don't you just join the other team already, you'll be less of a hindrance."

    I think the major issue for me is communication. If some guy is just incommunicative and pootling around doing something annoying, then it begins to make the red mist descend. On the other hand, if someone isn't very good, but makes an effort to communicate with his team, I'm willing to over look the fact that he sucks in exchange for him at least responding to attempts at interaction, which at the end of the day, is what NS is about.

    I've made more buddies playing NS online in the space of 4 months public play than I have in 3 years of CS. To me, that's NS.
