Just slightly maimed.
Ahh. Sweet, sweet internet access. How I missed you.

Some of the more observant of you lot may've noticed my marked absence from the forums and IRC for quite some time.

The intranet of the university at which I'm currently studying is run by the worst bunch of network Nazis I've ever encountered. Thusly, all ports bar those used by internet explorer are blocked when I’m using my student dialup. This includes IRC. MSN, ICQ, AIM, yahoo messenger and most games. I’m also limited to 30 meg a month data transfer and 8 hours a week of time.

I'm really up the faeces estuary with no method of propulsion.

To make matters worse, the only computational devices available to me at home is this 400MHz P2, 128 meg SDram laptop. This means no Natural-Selection for me. Hell, not even Half-Life runs on this chunk of debris. I’ll be polishing off the Starcraft single player campaign while I wait for my parents to crack under my intense barrage of reasons why they need to purchase me a new computer.

This post was just to let people know that I'm still around and will be alive and kicking (Pun intended) when I get a decent ISP. But alas; the closest telephone exchange to here isn’t upgraded for ADSL yet. So I’ll be stuck with dialup for a while at least.

P.S. I’m not sure if this comes under the category of “General discussion”. I’m a bit rusty with this “Internet” thing so if a mod sees the need they could bump it over to off topic without causing me to spitefully rain unholy fire unto their dwelling.

    /me waves to Scythe

Ahh, the joys of dialup, it's made me a better player, the lag is good for the mind. I've heard LPB's whining about 50 ping, 50! In my old dial up days I would have murdered (at least embezzled) to get that ping. And yet, when there is a lag spike on the server, I come out on top, when people whine about their ping, I adapt, and yes, I'm still owning the LPB's, even though I am one myself...

Gah, got off track there, hope everything works out in the end...

And it's a shame about the net nazi's, my school is simialar, the difference being we get a little bit more internet, otherwise it's the same

You should try some kind of port tunneling, but with that bandwidth limit, you'd probably run out within the first day. I know I download at least double that (30MB?) in a day, and I'm also 56k dialup.

Merry Xmas, I use this to dodge the Internet port blocking Nazi's at work.

Thanks Shockwave, that works like a charm.

I'm looking to set up mIRC to operate though the normal HTTP ports. Anyone know how to do this? Maybe by using some kind of proxy outside the firewall to redirect my packets off to gamesnet on the propper ports?

Anyone know if such a service exists and how to set it up?

Scythe: I have a special (updated, configured) version of that IRC client if you would like to use it. Its what I use to connect to IRC these days, what with my University being awful. I live 4 hours away from home too. D:

Poor Scythe. And Fam. You two seem to be pretty much in the same boat here.

I feel your pain Scythe. I had a similar situation w/ the net access here on campus. It didn't have a bandwidth usage cap, but it died for three or four days every two days. When it just died completely half-way through the semester I decided to get a cable modem up here (like what I used to have when I lived at home), and now all is good heh.

As far as your system goes, sax. Why not work a part-time job and get some $$ to upgrade?
