I was home sick anyways
Well, I was home sick so I decided to finally setup our new WI-FI (802.11b) network using Microsoft's new MN-500 basestation. I have to say it was the easiest home network setup I've ever done. I literally only had to plug in the router/switch/wireless antenna to my cable mode, plug in the wireless card to the laptop, plug this pc and another into two of the basestation's 4 cat-5 jacks, let the CD autoplay, and boom: Instant shared connection, with wireless and cabled connections. Very, very cool. No screwing with initial settings, no having to beg DHCP to work, nothing. Not that I mind doing those things, but if you want to recommend a simple home networking solution to a non-tech friend, I'd say go with this. Your mother could handle it.
Right now I'm typing away at my desk on one PC, another one is FTPing up some files, and the old lady is VPN tunnelled into her office from the living room. Snazzy.
For those of you not in the know, I am a networking and client/server engineer and have been working as a consultant for about 8 years. I've never seen anything as easy as this, even with some commercial products I've worked on like Radioframe, Nortel's proprietary WI-FI, and Cisco's solutions and for a SOHO situation, this rules. It even beats Sonicwall for ease of use, which I always thought was the ruling king. I'll stop gushing now, I sound like a fanboy.

How much did the basestation cost? i might try it
Anyway, wireless LANs are just amazing at home. My house is running one that covers the entire house and our backyard, so it's just amazing. Great speed up and down.
The wireless at my school however, sucks horribly. It's spread so thin that download speeds are awful. It drops out when too many people (like 10000+) are on, and from what I've heard, it goes out for days at a time. That's why I'm on regular AT&T at my apartment on campus.
The MN-500 router was $129, the MN-520 wireless adapter for the laptop was $30. I already had ethernet cards in the other two machines, but the MN-120 ethernet cards were going for about $20 apiece. All best buy prices, I'm sure you could find cheaper if you looked hard. If you use the MN-series network cards throughout, it's even easier to setup. If you're looking for that extra edge of easiness.

Semper-Fi, marine!
I did some wardriving when I went back home, and found a wireless that I could connect to whenever it wasn't too windy. The best part was that I had FULL access to the router, so I doubt they even realize I used it (mm, deletion of data that could be traced back to me).
As for wireless, Monse sounds like he's not stupid (read, 8 years in da biz), so I don't think you guys will be able to access his 'net.
Personally just use MAC addresses, they were the easiest for me to config..
In a 90min period they found 448 networks 74% of them were totaly unsecured, and 75 of the access points they found were at factory default configurations...it is a nice article also gives you a few tips on securing them and how wi-fi works

OH MY GOD! Please tell me they didn't show that on TV!!!!
Having gone wireless, I would never go back to the wired skein of death.
