Welp, Built My New Computer...

from scratch even...
went ahead and moved my old hard drive, cd rom, burner, and floppy onto a new asus p4g8x motherboard, with a p4 2.4ghz processor into a server case.

Finds my hard drive fine,
it just doesn't recognize my floppy drive, my cd rom, or my burner, and I have no sound

I suspect that maybe the sound issue is caused by windows ME not having information about the onboard sound that came with the board (ME was the OS previously on my hard drive). Soon as I get the stupid thing to recognize my two cd drives and my floppy I'll get XP up and running and hopefully take it from there

Thought you guys might want to laugh at the noob's first attempt at building something <grin>

The sound prob may be because your motherboard wont have the onboard sound enabled - you need to go into the bios to do this (dont ask where, it may be different on your mobo - ive got an MSI board)

As for the CD drives and floppy drive, are you sure you connected them up correctly?

Yeah, check the Slave/Master/CS jumpers on those drives too.
And push the ide cable into the motherboard firmly - I always find that they are annoyingly hard to get in properly, and come out by there own sometimes too.

Hahaha!! Okay, now that I've fulfilled your request, let's get that beast to purr...

Definetly poke through the BIOS and mess with the settings. Don't worry, it's actually difficult to muck it up unless you tinker with settings you're unsure about (the common ones are pretty much self-explanatory).

Mojo posted my suggestion just as I hit Reply, but yeah - jumpers are the most likely cause of your problems with the CD/burner thing. Just try switching the cable locations (you might need to take the drives out first) or change the jumpers. You might still need to take the drives out if the jumper config isn't visible or if the jumpers themselves aren't easily accessable.

Yeah, i figured my main problem lies in the fact that I started off trying to get everything on and functional at once. What I'll try doing here is disconnecting the rom / burner, and getting the floppy working, then the cd, then the burner. I'll definitely have to poke around and check for the sound option in bios, thanks for the heads up

Yep, already have windows xp pro w/ sp1, and am actually waiting to install it.
I'd be waiting much less if my comp would acknowledge the fact I have a cd rom in

Edit - Question for you guys...
My regular cd rom only has two necessary plugs from what I perceive, one for power, and one to connect to the motherboard.

The burner however, when I removed it from my old computer, has a third wire which I left attached to it, but have no idea its function or purpose. Its one of the really small, thin wires, to be plugged (presumably onto the motherboard) with i think either 3 or 4 tiny pins on it. Any ideas?

I think the 3rd wire is for audio. To be quite honest, I never notice any difference whether it's plugged in or not.

Hmm, yep, think I've discovered why it wouldn't recognize my floppy drive, it requires power just like everything else

    :embarassed look:

that problem usually happens when the OS doesnt have drivers for the IDE interface or the IDE BUS. I've never heard of a floppy not being detected by BIOS, the onlt way to fix it is to get your motherboard CD and copy it to your HD, then run the Driver setup program from the copy of the CD. If you cant boot off of a bootdisk with CD-rom support youll have to slave that drive in someone elses computer and copy the CD to it
