2 Versions Of Ns_caged?

MadjaiMadjai Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 2986Members
hiya. well i was playing on ns_caged on one server, we started in vent hive and so i moved to shipping tunnel and noticed this wierd thing. take a look for yourselves (its txt format so you dont have to copy/paste);

<a href='http://www.geocities.com/madpostal2002/ns_caged2.txt' target='_blank'>http://www.geocities.com/madpostal2002/ns_caged2.txt</a>
<a href='http://www.geocities.com/madpostal2002/ns_caged1.txt' target='_blank'>http://www.geocities.com/madpostal2002/ns_caged1.txt</a>

well at first i thought it was an entity glitch but when i told the other players they said it always looked like that... i thought i was going crazy.

so where there is supposed to be a floor and that platform there is nothing, they werent invisible either. there was NOTHING, i could walk down into that whole in the ground.

so whats up with this??

Those pieces look like there both ents.

They could have been taken out on the server-side.

yea thats what i figured, but every other alien player said it was normal, and i dont think all of them are regulars on that server.

and geocities lets you change the file name, so i just renamed them and put .txt at the end.

    About txt images-

You can rename images that are .gif or .jpg to .txt files, and they will show up correctly. This is VERY useful when you remote link from places like geocities, which doesn't allow remote linking of .gif or .jpg files, but DOES allow linking of .txt files, meaning, you can get around them, which is exactly what he did <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Phew!

i remember once being astonished that i could look under one of those crates and see that it was invisible from underneath. i must have been playing on it when some jerk had hacked the map like in that screenshot. i always avoid servers with hacked maps now coz i can't stop insulting those admins.

I've seen that happen, like the server fails to load them or something? <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

TXT images actually only work in IE, I believe. This is because IE often "second guesses" things -- if it sees a .txt file with .jpg or .gif headers in it, it displays it as an image. Opera or Mozilla (I think) see a .txt file with a .jpg header and display it as a .txt file (just gibberish)

ya you could see under the boxes, its funky. looks even funkier when the ladder is a foot off the floor.
  • qrackdqrackd Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 5996Members
If the server had admin mod, that could have been a reason why. Admin Mod has some weird glitch where it will remove a random entity. This could be small like making a ladder look invisible, to harmful where you could not cap the flag on a side in TFC. That is my guess on what is wrong with that.

does it make entities look invisible or actually have them not there?

It could be the 'stripent' plugin gone horribly, horribly awry. The one used to take out particle effects until the server-patches make NS go fast enough to be able to use 'em without problems. Or an earlier version... sometimes they'd get 'overzealous' and pull out things /besides/ the particle effects, such as guard rails (have been on some servers where the RR in Nothing is missing the rail at the back on the top level, which I run along).

Thing is, they may just never have noticed it was there. It's always been there every time *I* walk past. But others may not notice/remember its presence and misremember it as never having been there. Same phenomena as 'recovered memories', just recovered memories takes outside suggestions instead of replacing it with your own perception.

Acutally, I've run into this problem in DOD as well, its when HL doesn't load the map correctly. The object is still there but isn't drawn. You need to exit the game and reload it (retry in Con. doesn't work) to fix it. Its just a random thing, nothing to worry about.

Yes, but he mentioned being able to walk down into the hole.. meaning the grating along the floor was missing. Seeing under one of the boxes would make me think that the entities were improperly stripped, and not just mis-loaded.

It looks to me like the map just didn't load properly. We had problems with this on our dod server months ago where on one map you couldn't get into a major part of the map due to a missing set of stairs. Restartign the server worked for awhile, but the problem didn't totally go away until the servers were upgraded when dod 2.1 came out.

god damn these map hackers; now we don't know if it was them or if it is a bug in the game. this should be investigated further.

This happens on servers that disable some entities for more server performance.
    A simple serverside change.
disabling the hologram in holoroom is a simple example.
disabling Func_walls is new to me, but possivle.

Correct. This is similar to the Outlook feature that enables convenient virus spreading. The user thinks it's just a text file, but Outlook recognizes it's executable and helpfully starts the virus. In other email programs it just looks like garbage. A quite similar feature also makes it easy to get template virus programs into normal .doc files. (they fixed those at least partially, the IE version of this productivity enhancement* will probably remain in until someone figures out how to hack stuff with it.)

If you have mozilla (I do), no problem, just save the txt file to disk, change the extension to jpg, and open them in Mozilla or a graphics program.

<span style='font-size:8pt;line-height:100%'> * productivity enhancement for virus writers, obviously </span>

Now, about those grates, they disappear everywhere if you get connection problems (such as the dreaded cl_flushentitypacket). Suddenly all gratings, often floors, turn into holes.

    Voogru,

They are is "they're" not "there". "There" implies where something is. "Their" implies something someone owns such as "Their house".

That doesn't make any sense. As far as I know, if you remove a func_wall like that, which you can, the clipnodes it created would still remain, and you shouldn't be able to 'pass through' the area where the brush used to be. Unless there's also some way for Adminmod to add clipnodes to a .bsp, have it be completely server side, and still maintain file integrity so that clients don't get a 'your ns_caged.bsp differs from the server's .bsp.'

What type of server was it?
  • qrackdqrackd Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 5996Members
I don't know exactly how Admin mod does it, but it does. To clarify, it's a bug not a feature. On some CS and TFC servers with Admin mod installed in it, it would remove the ladder brush, but yet the ladder would still be there, or the ladder would just be gone. In a tfc server I used to play in, the flag cap point for the red team was gone, thus making it impossible to cap the flag. From looking at one of the screenshots, this is what I think is causing it.
