Mines At Early Game

plz use them more...
I hope this hasn't been disgussed before, I did some search, but i wasn't sure about what to search so...

What is better and cheaper base defence than mines, when aliens only have one hive and skulks?
They cost only 8rp and you can secure your base and infantry portals with them. Much cheaper than build a TF and few sentrys. In many games there is one marine protecting the base against skulk rushes, when others are locking down hives. But what if there attacks more than one skulk and kill that marine...bye bye base...
And even if you have sentrys in your base, it is not a problem to dodge them as skulk, so mines will finish the job what sentrys couldn't.

One mine = one dead

Also when taking those first res nodes, it's a good idea to defend them with one pack of mines. It will stop that lonely skulk who is searching those captured res towers. Or at least he have to attack twice, if he want's to destroy it and that res tower will live longer. In big servers mines are not that good, but in smaller (10-12 player) they are very effective.

For some vent protection mines fit perfectly. For example, if you are securing that cargo hive in ns_nothing and put one pack of mines in that vent which leads in viadukt. If you put those mines far enough to each others (so all of them doesn't blow up at the same time) you can stop 5 skulks from that vent.

I just think that commanders should give mines more often than they now do...

1 mine does not necessarily equal 1 dead .

If you're good at running in-and-out, you can trigger those mines without complete damage to your skulk.

Well maybe not one mine against carapaced skulk, but without cara iam pretty sure that one mine is enough.
Skulk has 70/10 and mine does 100, but with cara they have 70/30 and that armor absorbs 60%, so it is possible to survive with one mine, but you have go and heal yourself after that

    Edit:
And if you upgrade weapons power from arms lab to level 1 or 2, i think then one mine is enough to take out carapaced skulk...

I agree pretty much with what the original post said except for the fact that mines have one serious flaw; they are horrible in all tournament games. Sure, whenever I play with clannies in a pug, someone drops mines somewhere in the base, which really does help to avoid random skulks destroying 40 res worth of buildings. Other than that .. well .. I have a story.

Once upon a time when the sky was dark and minds were cloudly with too much serious play, a marine team came out that wanted only MINES.

Now, think about this ... 6 marines running toward the alien's starting hive all with their mines out! At the sign of a skulk, everyone dropped his/her mines. The first guy usually got 1-2 off, but the others managed to get by as the skulk somehow killed himself on one of the marine's mines. 3 of them reach the hive and start dropping mines all over the entrance and surrounding areas.

Back at base, more mines are handed out and everyone proceeds to run to their deaths AGAIN! There wasn't even an observatory ... just the lone armory and infantry portals. By the time someone decides to get an RT, the aliens cannot help but die on the masses of mines loaded outside of their hive.

    Fast forward 20 miniutes ...

Motion tracking was researched so that lone skulk that got off to gorge was hunted down. Mines were all over the map, in so many random places that sometimes a hunter-marine wasn't needed. Most of the marines just ran around and attempted to drop more mines, occassionally lmging for needed protection. Suddenly, one of the many comms said, "We're upgrading weapons .. mines do +20% more damage!" In response, the team rejoiced!

    Fast forward 10 miniutes ...

Marines are not really accomplishing anything. Aliens are rather **** since they are at least semi-trying to win yet can't seem to get that key second hive. I mean, how do you think they are gonna do it with 1 rt? Suddenly, another comm got an idea to drop GLs. How outlandish .. in a land of ALL mines!
Before you know it, the alien's hive is being pounded by 3 GLs with the support of mines. Yay, we win!

    Fast forward 2 hours ...

More mines, new map, more mines, more dead skulks, more mines, a hive switch (they had 2, but no res for fades). We suprise with GLs again and go for the win! Amazing! Considering the fact that the marines actually won 2 times in a row in PUB games!

    Disclaimer & Dedication

This strat is meant for general pub/fun play or just to **** most people off. Amazingly enough, it does seem to win while marines are extremely ill fated in pub games. And of course, this is dedicated to my friend who played aliens the whole time, not believeing that mines were winning the game (literally).

    LOL
    Nice mine rush

There is one problem, if you put mines too much around the map, server will eventually crash
And what i have undestanded, gorges can set off mines by using the spit....it is not that good as acid rocket, but few spit and *boom* (i haven't ever tryed to do this with gorge) or then it is just a second hive gorge who can do this, iam not sure...

Oh and i haven't ever played tournament games...what is that anyway?

mines to defend the IP (3 on the floor 1 on top) works wonders, that leaves 1 mine spare to put behind the res node to stop skulks hiding behind it and biting it while you're base defender can't run around the back and kill it without serious risk of loss of life.

I usually play on 1 server, so I know who knows how to play and who doesn't. I specifically order a certain player to base so I can give HIM mines. I try to avoid dropping them randomly as my base ends up looking like a disco.

I mine off my phases at hives, TFs at hives, infantry portals, open resource nodes and my CC chair if it's in a ridiculous place like in hera.

Eh...1 server ? Do you mean that there is one player each side?
If i got this right, especially then the mines rulez. I played today at ns_nancy and i was the only marine and there was two aliens against me (pretty unfair ). Server was 14 player server, but clock was 9.00, so all servers were pretty empty.

First i put mines in my base and then i builded res tower near base and rushed there with mines. After that i builded PG in base and placed another PG in nameless hive. Again i rushed with mines in that hive and secured phase with them. I also secured that res node which is near nameless hive with mines. I upgraded jp and hmg and i managed to took down the hive in sub (gorge just started to build it). Few minutes later i killed that port engine hive

Still, this does work reasonably well if used in the right positions.

Yes that works, but if commander alert one marine he can kill you easily, because he has a good view at you while you are on top of it. And if you try to jump of that RT and attack to that marine, you may accidentíly jump on top of a mine which is on the floor

It takes a bit more time to climb on top of that RT than just run and start to bite it and
you cant see anything while you are on top of it, because you have to look down while biting

What if marine puts 4 mines around it and 1 mine on top

If you throw mines next to your armory and expect them to be placed properly, you're kidding yourself. Most of the time the mines go into some weird s*it locations too hard for me to describe. Your base might end up looking like a supernova after one fade kicks in. You gotta ask someone specifically to plant them: if they don't respond, they can't type and probably have no brains either so it's not smart to give that gloomy looking gnome mines. If they spam "Mines! Mines!!1 Give mines!1!" too eagerly, they might think mines will win the game and thus have no brains either. Clanners are a pretty safe bet. If you get a response and it's more like "Sure, commander, I will place the mines" instead of "j00, gimme m1n3z noW!!1!", youre safe inside that Command Chair.

I just had 2 games with ridiculously GREAT mine usage

    Game 1:

Mines were dropped in plentiful amounts at the beginning and for every new outpost......instead of usin TFs we just dropped mines in the new outposts (we took 2 hives real quick this way)

It held the skulks off for a very very long time, no TF needed......but alas we lost it in the end because we tried to go heavy siege near port I think.......tried to push them back but we ended up losing too much res and getting to far behind (got behind on res because of losing our siege push...not cuz of the mines )

    Game 2:

Mines were used sparingly.......the marines teched up to JPs pretty quick (I was alien; they had JP right before our gorge locked the 2nd hive down and was rdy to build it)

they at first tried to just normally JP rush our mine hive...didn't work

then they came back......and this time as they moved down the hall to port they kept mining the damn place in small pockets as they moved forward........byt he time they got to the lip of port entrance you couldn't flank them (had to run on wall to avoid mines = easy to spot = easy to shoot) and we sure as hell couldn't hit them headon because we would always die, mainly from the mines along with the extra few gunwounds

needless to say we got the snot kicked out of us, but it was fun

I guess I'm just a n00b cuz' tonight was the first time I've seen mines used effectively

grrr I should SO be doing my work but darnit good games like this makes me wanna stay up and play NS like fool .....after CS for 2 yrs, and 1 month of this, there is no comparison in the fun factor....
In fact I think I'm gonna go screw around with mines on a LAN tomorrow

props to |*NG (excuse me if I got the name wrong ) for showing me to ignore people who say mines are never useful (and yes people have told me that more then once)
