Fortunately, the beta leeches from your current CS files to make the wait shorter and not a full 400MB download. (no, it's not 600MB, but 400MB after you first download everything)
Flayra has talked about putting NS on Steam, but if that happens, it won't occur until 1.2 at the earliest. Steam is a great tool for both users and developers.
It's my belief that 56k users probably shouldn't be playing online FPS games in the first place and are very lucky if they can do so with a ping under 200. (net lag, not server lag)

Yea, its your belief, but you think its easy to get broadband in those f*cking small lands? Yea, i can get broadband here, but i would pay MORE than i GET PAID in my work!!! Yea, those suckers want to introduce (yea, INTRODUCE, NOW, you hear good) ADSL here, but again it wont be anything cheap and you (err, not you but me or such stupid people in this stupid land) will still have to pay for TIME we spent on NET, can you understand this? We pay monthly AND for the TIME we are connected EVEN on ugly stupid 56k modem. Grr, aaargh, hate Telecom, HATE TELECOM, NUKE THEM!!!
Um, well, just wanted to say that all that Steam stuff stinks a bit, you understand, downloading 400 MB dont costs me just time, but money too. 400MB, mm, that will i download 14,2222... hours ideally (so in real, something about 16-17 hours), this download joke will cost me about 10$ (average payment here is 350$ (converted), and what remains after you pay all crap makes something bout 200$).
I would definitly pay for steam <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
I would never pay for steam until they send me every update on CD with free shiping by DPD or such service (36 hours to deliver) <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

I once had a 56k connection... but it's just not the same.
As for monthly cost + fees per time or MBs, this is just another method broadband companies are trying. It makes logical sense since the more MBs we transfer the more service of theirs were using, but community leaders are against this kind of payment method. In an ideal world, broadband will be free and you'll be able to connect from any location wirelessly. Wi-Fi is a step in the right direction towards this ideal.

So will it be required that steam is nessesary to play it's supported mods?
Also, will it ever be pay to play? (Shudders)
And, if steam is constantly updating it's users, then how will non-steam users be able to play with them?
And, will steam leave 56K'ers in the dust? (like me) Or will have to suffer a 600+ MB DL over the course of 1 week? (Shudders)
