Darkness due to the JPG I already said sorry, use an image editor to brighten it up to gamma ramp 1.5. The first is the node at the exit of the maintenence corridor, the third is the entrance to the miantenence corridor.

[EDIT] The nos_grate2 is the ceiling texture on the first picture, this area is supposed to be a skulks haven[/EDIT]

Seems very inspired by ns_eclipse. Which is no bad thing, as eclipse is great, but still.

Well, the second shot is also much more reminiscent of the very first shots of Eclipse's central corridors than the current version. I'll be honest; I see quite a bit more resemblance to Eclipse in those first 2 shots than I'd like to see in other maps.

In terms of architecture, the first and third pics have at least some inspiration from Eclipse. The lighting is obviously different (blue vs. 'natural'), but the overall ambience is similar.

When I first saw the pics, I didn't even see a similarity until KFS's first comment. Although now that I've glanced back at them a few times while writing this post, they're seeming more and more similar.

Still, it looks good so far. I'd suggest you keep working on it, but tweak the ambience a tad, if possible. Having sections that look similar to other maps isn't a big deal, IMO. Imitation is (supposedly) the most sincere form of flattery, after all.

The layout author wanted it to look like the south loop with some subtle differences. And the second corridor was once in the old ns_fusion.rmf - I just thought it goes nicely with the map in that area, especiall with the re-textured wall on the left (v_wad textures). Below is a re-masked area of the layout, its the "South Look Inspired" Maintanenece Access Corridor. Don't worry though, there is no place such as maintanence access, the map is trying to be a bit different.

KFS: If you want it re-designed, I will do it on your request.

Sycophant: Honest opinion, and the second corridor was inspired by another good community mapper, can't remember the name of the mappr (God knows how I forget) but he created ns_nothing.

Jedediah: So far no maps have been the same, for example, can you relate tanith to nothing? Or eclipse to nancy? They're all totally different.

Ekaj: Read the first paragraph.

Maveric: No ns_darkblue lol. Clue - SEC

well jeez KFS... When they make buildings they usualy go by a specific template or whatever, thats why the 1st ss is so similar to south loop, thats how they do nodes in research bases!

Well just for ollij I brightened the node ceiling up a bit, yet again the gamma is 1.5. So use photoshop/paint shop pro and get the full out of the image (yeah crappy jpg again) I dont think the new lights go well with the blue, but ingame its definately brightened up, suggestions and ideas?

[EDIT]
A little map insight

The map is set after eclipse - infact probably after nearly all the maps in deevelopment and thats been released, its been scanning planets, ships, space stations etc that were last known to have the kharaa. The *******|SEC has scanned Space Station Nothing and the mines where ns_origin takes place, no kharaa activity; but then it hovers unfortunately over . . . Tertuva III (I think thats the name of the planet eclipse is based on)

2D maze of corridors filled with pipes and grates?

bast and hera are the only maps that don't make me feel like I'm playing pac-man

Texturing is good, brush work is detailed, mock of south loop is accurate (but why should we care chaps, it's only a computer game). Now you just need some strong light. light _spot, light_spot, light_spot!

I have a real feeling I'm going to get flamed for that 'only a computer game comment'

Well, the story of Eclipse, Veil, Kara, and Valhalla is entirely centered around the Tentuva III conflict - First two on the ground in different sections of Eclipse station, then on an independent freighter just leaving the planet after aiding in the evacuation, then on the planet's orbital space station. I'd like to think I've got the story in that location tied up.

I'm not going to ask you to change anything, that's completely overstepping my bounds. I do think there's a lot of room for you to take the styles further -- after all, my version of the south loop sucks anyway, why would you want to make anything like that?

Stop slagging off your own map KFS! eclipse rules!
Taking a few ideas from other maps is good, but don't take too many, make sure the rest of your map is very different from eclipse.

KFS: My initial idea was if the layout author (WraithOfDark) Made the layout similar to the south loop and wanted it to look like the south loop, I would make it similar. With a few different architechture solutions (Adding of pipes, maybe something else on the wall/floor around the node) I could make it look like a "transformed" area. And I got a new storyline through about 20mins ago which sounds promising.

As long as you didn't decompile eclipse, and change the lighting, and the arrangement, thou it dosn't look like it so, GJ.

this could so use steam coming out of the floor vents.
• RevenantRevenant Join Date: 2003-01-13 Member: 12249Members
It would look pretty nice, which vent? Nearest to screen, furthest or middle? IMO, maybe some hera fog instead of the steam might look better with one of the pipes busted open.
