Bad news for the little guys. This server runs on RH 7; I guess we'll see now if:

After that rat **** Data Structures teacher decided it'd be fun to make us all Telnet into a linux shell and do our code completely in VI, i've grown to hate linux.
O and BTW, open source isnt just linux stuff
Example;
Bob doesn't use internet explorer, as that would be conforming to the machine. Bob uses SupeRWhaCkyBrowSer Beta .05108502358. Never mind the fact that it crashes every 5 minutes, has trouble playing media, and occassionally deletes his windows directory, he's not using IE, and for this, he's l337, and better than all the rest of those tards <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

Yup. Perfectly put.
Joe: Hey guys, guess what. Now I'm running Linux
Joe's Gang: Whoa, cool! You're neat!
Joe: Yeah, no more of that Windows OS crap!
Ted: So you wanna play CS tonight?
Joe: Can't. My sound card won't work and I screwed something up and now my computer doesn't recognize OpenGL.
Ted: Ooh, that sucks.
Jim: Well, how bout you play some Rebellion with me? That's a pretty old game.
Joe: Uh, my computer also sort of takes the right half of the moniter and inverts the colors, then flips the top one third.
Ted: Why's it do that?
Joe: Dunno. At least now I'm running Linux instead of Microcrap.
Gang: Amen.
Linux is really good for certain things if you're willing to put some effort into learning how to operate it properly, and are aware of its advantages and disadvantages. It is, like all operating systems, lacking in many areas. I really wouldn't recommend it for desktop use, whatever the particularly zealots may suggest. Recently, things have improved quite considerably for mainstream applications, and I imagine within a year or so it'll become a real contender. Until then, I'm still happy to dual-boot.
At the moment, Windows 2000 takes the desktop crown, followed by MacOS X. Yes, a Linux fan just said that. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

I know I shouldn't, but I'll bite. The reson that sound card doesn't work proporly or the videocard has no acceleration is becuase companies tend to only write drivers for the OS that has enough share to be considered a monopoly. This in it self isn't so bad, if these companies would release enough information to allow Open Source devs to write their own drivers, which they often dont. This is one reason why many (insert favorite OSS OS here) users hate Microsoft and Windows. They generally hate Windows users 'cause of the frustration caused trying to explain why they run linux at all.
OSS users are human too (mostly), and as such often hate people and things they shouldn't.

(jk)Neither can I, you traitor(/jk)
Seriously though, as far as anything but gaming goes I would have reversed those 2 choices.
I do that all the time <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> Vi is great once you get used to it. I use gVim in windows to edit all my code.
Unless you're willing to pay for Windows Advanced Terminal Server, its the only way to use big hardware without actually going into the room with it and plugging a keyboard in to it.
We've set up a linux router/firewall which does more than most windows firewall packages can do, and all it cost us was a couple of weekends and an old computer which probably couldn't even run Windows 2K. If we wanted to set up a windows box to do the same, it would of cost us at least ?500.
I cannot think of any virus or worm that has had much effect that runs on linux.
If you have the skills, linux is free while windows costs money.
I haven't tried using linux desktop stuff for ages though, it generally sucks compared to windows. Its supposed to of improved a lot, I might give it another go at some point.

Whoa. I just made that up. Somebody knows too much about computers.
Seriously, I just thought of a bunch of problems and threw them in. Thank you for the in depth reply though. Would have warmed someone else's hear <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
