Why Does Ns Have Custom Gamma?

Kinda a techy question
I've always been curious as to why Flayra put in his own Gamma boost for Natural Selection? why couldn't he just keep it the same? It seems fine in other half life mods. Does it allow for more shadows or better lightly or something? Or is it just a mapper convinence?

Uhm... it's not a gamma booster--just something to reset it to the hardware defaults--just in case. There's a gamma tuning test that comes with the mod, which is probably there to (what else) help people calibrate their gamma to see the game the way it was meant to be seen.

Unfortunately since some gamma controls and settings exist within half-life, the calibration tool isn't too useful--it runs on the desktop, not in Half Life.

Now, if there was a nsgamma.bsp map we could use for calibration...

it creates a more dramatic experiance, theres alot more contrast.

Believe me, due to a wierd bug with duel monitors, I was forced to play NS without the Gamma amp ...

it wasn't near as good as it is with it on.

Just get a monitor with a digital input and a vid card with DVI output. Problem solved DVI autoconfigures brightness, contrast, horizontal/vertical alignments, etc. automatically.. atleast on this LCD. I'm pretty sure it does it on CRTs too.

NS tweaks gamma to make lights brighter and shadows darker; greater contrast = more atmospheric and greater opportunity for hiding in shadows, etc.

That it is referred to at all as 'gamma' is only a misnomer. It is overbrightening. It's an attempt to make colors more colorful and tone curve greater (what some refer to as contrast, although it isn't a straight contrast ramp). It is not an attempt to override your own gamma settings, but it does affect some people more than they'd like.

Turn sv_cheats on and type in setgamma 1.0 (which is the level for no 'gamma' adjustment) and you'll notice that all of the maps look a whole lot less vibrant and attractive in terms of lighting quality.

It's really just eye candy, but it's very sweet candy.
