If you have lots of res, a little story here might give you an idea of something to try with it.
I just tried a gamble on ns_hera and it worked well. We, the aliens, started in archiving. The marines went for processing so that they could siege the ventilation and data core hives from one location. They did get it, and even our gorge went skulk while we were all trying to take it down. It wasn't looking good for us, but we were keeping them slowed down because they still didn't actually have a siege up that could hit the ventilation hive.
We hadn't had a gorge for a while, so I went to ventilation, went gorge, put up the hive and started throwing offensive chambers all over the room in an effort to keep the inevitable sieging from targeting the hive. They scanned, saw the hive, and started the sieging. But they kept hitting the offensive towers and I kept putting them back up (not bothering to actually build them) and running. The hive went up and some of the team managed to go fade and take out processing.
That's the important part. The rest of the game was a back and forth where we got knocked back to one hive (a different one each time) numerous times, but we came through in the end.
The point is, if you are trying to save a hive from a siege, try throwing up offensive tower distractions in between it and the siege to buy time.

On one of those mod servers there is a "lerk can pick up gorges with the use button" and that is exactly what we did ;-)
