1.04 Shattered Dreams

grumlingrumlin Join Date: 2002-12-31 Member: 11663Members
Well, havent been playing NS for a few weeks as I got fed up of the bugs in 1.03 that stopped a sizeable proportion of commanders being able to win the game.

downloaded 1.04 today, and found that commanding my very first game the same bugs were there. Minimap screwup so that i can't highlight any marines. 'Stickyness' on icons if you try to build without Rps, impossible to get rid of selection without a clickfrenzy. Mike not working on mouse3 in commander chair, but fine in marine or alien mode. Didnt even try to see if the turret factory bug has been fixed - i'd seen enough.

Sigh. NS is a great game, but I don't want to play against the software, just against the enemy. Time for more CMBB instead...

And before someone whines 'bet you couldnt do better' - agreed, but thats not my line of work. If I produced the systematic errors despite customer complaints IRL, I would deserve to have no customers...

Commander mode will be greatly improved in version 1.1. Just be patient. In the meantime, don't go Comm yourself and theres plenty of servers where there are commanders capable of winning.

    About your specific gripes:

You can't select marines from the mini-map. It's never been a function AFAIK.

Sticking icons. Minorily annoying, just click on a blank bit of the command menu in the bottom right to get rid of it.

You can't bind anything to the mice buttons in commander mode. Can you bind team chat to a mouse button in Starcraft ? Or any other RTS ? No, because your selecting and gaving orders using those buttons (well, 1 and 2 anyway). Allowing mouse 3 to be boundable isn't that high on the list of prioritys. Besides, it might be used with groups in 1.1.

TF bug (I presume you mean upgrading) is fixed.

Hope that helps you to keep playing NS!!

Many of the bugs you suggest do not affect the vast majority of player, I have never had the minimap screw up and I play LOTS. Icons sometimes stick when I get into the com chair but a quick click on a structure sorts this out, as for voice comms not working on mouse3, I use the keyboard for voice comms but most mice drivers allow you to rebind the mouse3 button to emulate a keystroke.

Also if you had read the instructions you will have seen that you do not need to download 1.04 unless you intend on running a server. It is still early days but I really think your being a bit fussy, try posting your problems on tech support/ bug report forums with full details of your PC and problems, someone might be able to help.

Thought I'd get some answers with that tone ....

on the minimap,. what i mean is drag and clicj to highlight all the marines in the 'box'. it tends to work for the first 5 mins, then refuses point blank to work for some reason.

on the 'bind keyboard not mouse 3' - i know, but when the action is fast and furious i don;t like to have to move my hand away from the mouse. that is a 'software obstacle' not an in-game challenge.

and yes, i could stay marine, but the strategy part of it is what makes NS head and shoulders above, say, BF1942 for me.

    Grumplin more like!
Cheer up. We're getting this game for free (unless you bought HL just to play NS) and the team are doing their best to sort all the bugs out. You know that the bugs you're talking about will be fixed soon and that, in all likelyhood, there will be several more new ones to tease us in later versions. This is what you have to expect from a mod in development. (damn fine mod too IMHO)

So... try not to be so negative, if you really can't stand to play 1.04 then come back when the next release is out (or play as a marine or Alien) if you enjoy the game. Be a happy chappy and come back when the next release is out!

Yes, several people do tell me that my tag is sooooooo close to what it SHOULD be <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> .

Anyway, I don;t want you to think I don;t appreciate the fact that this is a fine game and the ONLY reason I still have HL on my hard drive, its just that when a truely challenging game comes on the scene, to have to fight the machine and not other humans is a tad annoying.

If you want to shut me up:

    i) Give me as commander a 'select all marines' bind option
ii) Give me a 'deselect all items' bind option
iii) Give me a 'take off and nuke the site from orbit - its the only way to be sure' bind option

One of the above is humorous.......

NS is (basically) a first of its genre. It's built on a somewhat dated engine. And it's also version 1.0.

The fact that it works as well as it does speaks volumes of the devs' skill, ability, and ingenuity. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

You are confusing minimap to 'commander view'. Minimap is in lower-left corner, and you can't select anyone using it.

And you don't have to comm as said. Just be a simple order-following marine and you will not have any headache...

I'm pretty sure that the commander mode bugs need a client patch to be fixed.
  • grumlingrumlin Join Date: 2002-12-31 Member: 11663Members
Errr - satusq that is not true. The minimap in bottom left as commander lets you drag and click around an area and it autoselects any marines in the 'box'. It is very very useful, which is why i get so stressed when it stops working.

i command all the time and i rarely experiance problems, sure once in a while something will stick but its hardly worth moanin about it till 1.1 comes out with the fixes, the only bug that i find a **** is stuff sinking when u build it, or not being able to upgrade TF's to siege (especially on eclipse).

That's not true. Gloom for Quake2 was a predecessor.
  • MonsieurEvilMonsieurEvil Join Date: 2002-01-22 Member: 4Members, Retired Developer, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
We understand your frustrations, Grum. Some of the things you are describing may be addressed in a client-side patch, some not. It's a time-management thing more than an 'unfixable' thing. Try to hang in there, and keep playing.

As for Gloom being a predecessor, I have my own issues of that statement, but it's for a different topic, please.

Errr, 1.04 is a server side patch. That's why some of the client side bugs (like selecting marines, stickyness is still around). They should be fixed for 1.10.

    Now stop your whinging.

LOL. I notice in any forum three types of answers:
    i) helpful suggestions (usually from the intelligent designers)
ii) insults (usually from the 12 year olds with severe self esteem problems)
iii) humour (usually from normal people)

Anyway, my left hand is used for....um....er...i guess i never really thought of that option. Its usually holding a mug of tea or fiddling with the cat (DONT SAY ANY MORE)

And its not whinging, its legimate questioning. Anyway, had a good game last night as comm so I'm a bit less grumbly now.

As MonsE said, your issues need to be handled with a client-side patch. 1.04 is serverside only. It can't fix the bugs with the NS client, just what happens between the client and the server (Speed, cost, range)

err...i dont command much, but i coulda swore that if you have noone selected, your command goes to everyone. isnt that effectively "select all marines"?

The map and related and unrelated map bugs are TERRIBLE and are a blight on an otherwise well done mod that is supposed to be finished. I am really looking forward to the finished "feeling" of the comm in 1.1
  • eagleceaglec Join Date: 2002-11-25 Member: 9948Members, Constellation
If they waited until it was 'finished' (ie no more development needed) then we wouldn't have seen it for another 5 years...

Remember Half-Life v1, there have ben some significant bug fixes in the last few years and they are still developing patches. Remember CS v1?
Remember Windows 95? Only now are we getting close to what was advertised with windows XP! Seven years later, its the way software development works and I think we are quite lucky that v1.0 works as well as it does on such a wide range of computers.
