A Moment Here...

...to thank the team.
I just came back from browsing the train wreck that is the official Battlefield 1942 forum. Team-based FPSs are a favorite hobby of mine, so I've been keeping an eye on that game for a while and waiting to see if the problems it had on release are eventually patched away. I've apparently been spoiled by the NS boards where developers will actually, y'know, talk to people and reply to problems, because those BF1942 forums looked like something straight out of the depths of Hades. Complaints, problems, questions, all going without even the vaguest sense that anyone was going to ever reply to them or even read them. The place couldn't have been any more depressing if EA had a big flashing, "WE HAVE YOUR MONEY. WE DON'T CARE." banner on top of the forum pages.

It's scary how dehumanized the video game industry has become with its growth, back in the day you could write Sierra On-Line a question, and the owner of the frickin' company would write you back. Now you can count yourself lucky if Sub-Peon #342 from Department 9 sends you an automated reply.

Natural Selection proves that not only can a small, independant group put out a superior game, they can be much classier about dealing with the user base. Especially since the user base in question hasn't necessarily even given them a penny. You guys rule!

This, along with ongoing game development are 2 of the things i like most about mods. The smaller, more familiar community and the sense that you can actually communicate with the developers makes it a much warmer experience than playing a regular commerical game.

I don't always agree with Flayra and the testers, but i appreciate the fact that the whole thing is relatively open. Rather than 3 months worth of silence followed by a patch that completely changes the gameplay.

On a related note, anyone here consider themselves part of the CS community? I'd be interested to know if that community followed the same values as a regular mod community, or if the CS developers were unreachable on their retail-game pedestal.

I've loved the entire experience of watching NS grow. My brother Aldaris (board name, his real name obviously isn't that ) sent me one innocous e-mail last May, something along the lines of "check this mod out, looks cool" along with the address for the homepage.

Since then i've lurked and finally registered and started posting in these forums. My only regret is I should have got more involved with the community earlier on.

I think the forums are handled very well, many boards have nowhere near the number of mods and admins this one those.

In short, I think kitsune is right. The Dev and forum team have done and continue to keep the NS world a sane place to post and play in

One other thing, do Flayra and co. hang in any public irc channels? Something i did enjoy about the Q3F community was being able to assault lead coders with wet fish whenever the occasion called for it.

Oh yeah. You can find most of the dev's hanging out in #naturalselection, although they idle most of the time. If you're lucky, you might catch Flay even. I know a few of the PT's and dev's are in #nsradio as well, so check them out.

I anxiously await 1.1, simply because every patch that has come out has really polished this mod. This is hands down my favorite game/mod ever. Great work Team.

Me too This has to be one of the most well deisgned and awesome games I've ever played, and my eternal thanks goes to the developers. Once I actually get a credit card I'll be sending over the equivilant price of a new PC game to these wonderful people. Why? Because they deserve it far more than any other games developer out there Also, they probably need it more I'd rather be paying for Flayra's rent than the fat paycheck of yet another corperate CEO.
