Handing Out Armor And Weapons

DrekDrek Join Date: 2002-12-19 Member: 11165Members
Ok, I'm a Natural Selection noob, but so is my whole clan (we mostly play DOD, talk about a radical change ). So I play commander because, even though I don't know much, I know more than anybody else. I know how to drop guns so that my team can pick them up. I've got research and labs and all that stuff figured out, but one thing completely eludes me. How do I hand out armor? Do I drop it the same way I do weapons? How do I hand out weapons and armor to specific team members? I can see how I can drop weapons on them now that I think of it, but I have no clue how to hand out armor.

What does the little armor icon in the bottom right hand of my screen mean? Does it mean I am wearing armor or does it mean that I have armor to hand out?

Where can I drop things? Can I drop them anywhere or only within a certain distance from the command console or an armory?

Is there an online game manual somewhere for NS? I can't seem to find one.

Thanks.

Yes you have to drop them in prototype lab radius. Their icon is under the weapons in commander HUD.

Armor and weapon upgrades researched at the Arms lab is instantly given to all soldiers, regardless of positions or current equipment.
You can however research Heavy Armor at the Protoype lab, which must be dropped, in range of the Proto lab. That and JetPack, which must also be dropped within ProtoLab radius.

Heavy Armor is researched at the Prototype Lab (It costs 50 resources).

Armor upgrades is researched at the Arms Lab (individual research costs elude me right now)

Armor upgrades are instantly deployed upon research completion

Heavy armor is placed by selecting the Items Tab. It is the very bottom line, I forgot if it's left or right. Costs 25 rsc's.

If I remember well, its 20 - 40 - 60 ( same for weapons I think ).

You can research armor upgrades with the Arms Lab. Then all marines will have a better armor.
You can drop heavy armors (HA) with the Prototype Lab, but you need to research them first.

I know how to research armor and all that, but how do I drop them? Do I drop them the same way I do weapons? Do I have to drop them near a prototype lab?

The armour icon in the lower right corner is an indication that your armour has been upgraded. Unfortunately, it's not a very intuitive indication of what your armour level is; you kind of have to recognise the symbols. The gun icon is the same thing, for weapon upgrade levels. You know you're equipped with HA (Heavy Armour) when your hands are all black-gloved and your arms are huge.

HA and JPs (JetPacks) are both researched from the prototype lab, which you have to select to get the upgrade menu for. There's a cost to research them, AND to place them. You can only place them in a certain radius around the prototype lab. You have to actually outfit marines with these, who want them.

The weapons and armour upgrades are from the arms lab, which you have to select to get the upgrade menu for. These upgrades are like the ones in the Warcraft series, or Age of Empires - they boost everyone's armour and weapons strength without you having to drop them extra equipment.

[edit]
Oh, one more thing. Where you can drop stuff depends on what it is:

medkit: anywhere
ammo: anywhere
welder: around an armoury
shotgun: around an armoury
HMG (Heavy MachineGun): around anarmoury
GL (Grenade Launcher): not sure, either around an armoury or around the proto lab
mines: around an armoury

and for buildings:
CC (Command Centre): anywhere
IP (Infantry Portal): around a CC
obs(ervatory): around a CC, I think
TF (Turret Factory): anywhere
PG (Phase Gate): anywhere
turret: around a TF
ST (Siege Turret): around an advanced TF
arms lab: around a CC, I think
prototype lab: around a CC, I think

when an item is restricted to where you can place it by having to be around a building, when you've selected it a green circle appears marking where you can drop it.

Thanks for all the info folks. I should be a smarter commander as a result.
