i dont know if youve heard this or not but you may consider making use of the extrusion tool. select a face and use it to make an extension of that face, it doesnt seem all that much on the surface but with practice you can make almost any shape with it. Its also nice when making objects that you want the same on both sides, if you use extrusion, scale, and select vertexes on both sides you can keep a model very uniform and clean. Hard to describe :\ hope this helps anyway.
