Seeing Is Hearing - Hearing Is Seeing

USE YOUR FREAKIN HEADPHONES!
If you dont have Headphones, go buy some.

If you have Headphones, wear them.

If you wear Headphones use them.

If you use your Headphones you should know when, which Species and how many of them are comming from any direction. Be it behind you or above you, underneath you or from the shafts.

If you use your big fat ears you should hear the blubbering egg-evolving sound, follow its source, spot the egg and load your pistol clip into it.

If you see through your Headset you should know a Fade is comming at you and start screaming for help before you even see it.

If you can hear the gorge-building-sound run to it and kill it, then start knifing the chamber it was try building.

If you re not blind and not deph you should position yourself to a good ambushing point inside the room, adjusting it as needed based on your knowledge of closing hostiles.

If you got MotionTracking, well, then you only need a jetpack or HA and its all done for you.
You re a DemiGoD.

Seeing is Hearing and Hearing is Seeing!

- Even deph Aliens can hear Marines

- Climb Ladders while ducking so you dont play the someones-on-the-ladder song.

- Approaching with duck (very slow) doesnt give your footsteps away. Sometimes its a happy surprize for those gorges building res (yes you can hear if its a res havent you learned anything??)

Yes I have to agree with this. Sound is key in this game, aside from communications and teamwork of course. This is why a skulk (or any quick alien) with silence3 is a VERY versatile opponent.

Unfortunately my headphones are on the oops-I-sat-on-them-when-the-lights-were-off-my-bad status. Even good speakers are no substitute Gotta get me some Plantronics.

For 30$ i would have to say the plantronics Audio 90s are the best bang for your buck, Me and uubu use them and have nothing but good things to say about them, they are really high quality for a fair price.

What is it that headphones have that speakers don't? I have pretty good computer speakers and I can always follow a sound to its source and tell what that source will be. It seems that headphone's only advantage is that its closer to your ears, it its only just 2 speakers right? No further audio positioning i.e. a sound happening above your character won't happen in an upper region of the headphone right? It seems that the biggest advantage would be with 4 speakers 2 in front and 2 behind.

Could anyone clear this up for me?

    hoju2,

I don't really know why it's better, but headphones make it much easier to locate things. Maybe it's just a bit closer to what your brain is used to. When you swing the mouse (and your head/body) you hear differently and there is no crossover with headphones. Your left ear doesn't hear your right side headphone, but does hear your right side speaker. Maybe dat's why. Maybe it's just that most people have $5 speakers that sux0rs (NS is doing bad th1ng5 to my typing, sorry.)

Yeah maybe thats it, the sound from the left channel could never get into your right ear with enough foam padding shielding it. Can't believe I didn't think of that

I'm used to playing on a Linux server with no motion tracking so I've become quite good at locating aliens with my headphones, as well as marines

Yes fades do sound like gorges.

Many a time I've used my headphones to spot a gorge. Yell to my teammates over voice comm 'RUSH THE GORGE'

So we all charge around the corner to find out it's a fade.

Usually end up killing the fade - but the teammate chatter is classic.

'Rush the gorge he says.... '
    'That's a big #&%$&# gorge!'
'I didn't know gorges had acid rockets!'

Only way to distinguish fades and gorges is by the idle sound they make. All the other aliens have different walking sounds.

I think some people think I cheat sometimes because my ears are sensitive to the slightest sound in the game. I've gotten pretty good and figuring about how many skulks are coming during the prelim rush just by listening to the footsteps.

koss is an excellent brand of headphones. i use them almost exclusively, and i hear the gorge building on the other side of the map

i have a koss headset/mic and its worked perfect for me for years.... <3

I use a pair of Sony headphones and I agree that it is much nicer with them. Like someone said the sound comes from the sides and sounds more proper than from in front. If you have good headphones then they block out background noise which can make the more quiet sounds impossible to hear.

    ROFL!

Yo Gargamel, we played together a few times, can't remember which server, now.

Anyway, yeah, get headphones, a good tip, is if you hear the pitter patter of skulk feet, and you can't see the skulk, it's likely behind you rather than round the next corner.
  • DieHardDieHard Join Date: 2002-11-11 Member: 8173Members, Constellation
    eh there,

I like having my surround sound on while playing, but I can't always hear everyone on voice comm. Most of the time I can understand everyone, it is just the 10% i lose in bass/static. I can pick out locations with my headphones, but it is a hell of alot easier with the surround. I still wear my headphones in game, but it is just for mic use. If there is a problem I'll slam the mic jack in the front and the speakers switch over. Since everyone is stating their brands, I use Labtec Axis-001. Been through koss, sony, and other labtec. This version seem to be my preference, then again I'm a big fan of the behind the head headphones. I also don't like the large earmuffs because I start to sweat after a few hours. If you are going to buy headphones, two things to keep in mind: Cordlength (longer the better) and volume/mic control. It also would be nice if you could hear them before purchase.

I strongly agree on the "shut up and point the gun towards the entrance." When the comm doesn't give me an order I chill out near an entrance and wait to shoot a sulk in the back. I've played in too many games where a teammate will sit there and call out "waiting for order' or "in positition." Stealth is the key. (maybe that wasn't in this thread, but it doesn't hurt to be repeated).

Ever seen your teammate get chewed down cause he was typing on guard duty? That's "special"

Hey Error404! Yeah I remember you! Are you German? I need german pings, if you know what I mean, but somtimes I connect to other servers also. Hey mate maybe we ll see eachother

Realistic sound with an unrealistic price. I heard of a kickass pair of wireless head phones only availible in japan. Anyone know about these?

Well if you wana do this PROPPERLY:

    Kill the music.

    Use 5.1 surround

    BUT.

    Kill the sub,

Use the graphical EQ to cut out/reduce the bassy sounds..

Sit back and hear the tick tick tick of skulky footsteps from several miles distant.

the other day i saw something i really didn't like. some marine player wrote himself a script that allowed him to bunnyhop faster than a marine can normally run, *BUT* it also involved crouching in some way that he makes no sound at all the entire time. Pretty scary stuff.

Yeah I used FireWater's headset a few times - it's VERY tight. And actually I know where you can get them for $20 (unless the price changed already)

    http://www.micropro.com

It's a U.S. site, in case you're in Europe or somewhere that the shipping cost would outweigh the $10 saved.

    win.

Well, another very good thing to do every once in a while is:

Pull the cord out so you have no sound, stil have the earphones on, so its completely silent. Now you train your reactions and spotting ability.

The put them back on...youll know the difference =)

I tend to be more daring when I don't have sound on, dunno whether it's because there's no scary noises, or I don't know if a turret farm is waiting for me around a corner.
