The Lerk Rush

<div class="IPBDescription">Only 1 Hive & too many resources</div> The other night, I was playing as Marines, we had lost our start base and secured 2 hives. This was really quite embarrassing, but we eventually lost because we only had 2 res towers, while the Kharaa had every other res on the map. The Commander had only upgraded us to Level 1 armour and Level 3 weapons, so we were okay dealing with skulks, but then it seemed that almost everyone on the other team had gone Lerk.

Whenever we tried to repair or build new turrets, we'd all get simultaneously spiked in every direction by at least 6 or 7 Lerks, the Level 1 armour just doesn't protect against Lerk Spikes very well, so we found it hard to maintain our lead. Eventually, the commander was ordering us to defend 1 res node that we had managed to reclaim, and started spending ridiculous amounts of res points to build turrets and seige around it!!(I think he had gone completely nuts at that point).

I reckon that if we had upgraded to Level 2 armour, we could have done much more damage, or instead of trying to get more res, just saved up for HA and HMG. The point I'm trying to make is that, Level 1 armour is good against skulks but does not really stop Lerk Spikes. It's still possible to win, if almost everyone on the team go Lerk. The rate at which I saw turrets go down with 4 or 5 Lerks spiking them at the same time was truly incredible.

    I played commander at one time, rushed two hives and sealed them, then I had to restart NS, cause my sound died, and I couldt join the marine team

    The aliens had ALL the Resorucepoints(this was Caged, so the marines didnt have direct contact with the res points from the hives...)

    The aliens built forests of OCs and DCs, and everyone that wanted couuld go lerk or gorge...

    What we did was to build DCs as close to one of the hives as possible, then we would have lvl 3 Carpace, go in , kill a turret and get out

    They tried to siege but failed, since thye didnt have res to defend AND equip their soldiers...

    Map changed when we were building our second hive after 3 hours of fighting...

    only takes 2 nodes to win as marine. just make sure their in the hive. if your team cant organize to take out a few lerks than thats your loss. I would lose it as commander also.

    remember 2 nodes can win the game. Anymore than that and its just toys.

    In those type of games it is so much fun to just start building hives over and over. It is real effective cause it makes the turrets focus the attention on the hive and not the dozen lerks chomping on the phase gate/turret factory. But alas since marines can build unlimited turrets, this usually results in an endless game in which the server crashes due to all the turrets firing. But it is fun and at that point when the server crashes you know the aliens won because of their overwhelming strategic advantage and the marines willingess to rely only on turret farms and not on themselves.

    I executed two successful lerk rushes last night on ns_nothing, made easier by 1.04 <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    1st game:

    I joined after the game had started...we were in Cargo Bay, marines had locked down viaduct and powersilo.

    I skulked up to one of the ledges in powersilo, went gorge, threw down 6 D chambers and 2 O chambers...

    Went lerk, notified the team I now had a healing base there, one lerk joined me, and we proceeded to take powersilo back starting with the phase.

    Funny part was, they sent SIX HMG Jetpackers up to kill us, and they flew right into a flurry of teeth, spikes, and O chamber <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Two fell to thier death, and I spiked on in midair <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    We then built power silo, and took back viaduct with fades as they killed powersolo again...via and silo went up at the same time...

    Marines didn't realize we had all three hives until 7 onos showed up in base <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->


    2nd game: (different server)

    Game starts we are in cargobay, aliens chomp MS as marines relocate to powersilo and quickly phase rush and turret up viaduct.

    Once again, I skulked to the top, went gorge, and managed to build four D chambers with the scant resources then save for lerk (I was gorge #3, lol). Another guy caught wind of this, and came to join me. Marines built siege, and I took out the obs! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    One lerk was on one side, and one was on the other side, thus dividing the marines attention, while they were thus distracted, the team took back via with help from another awesome lerk...

    Best part was providing covering fire for the other then flying back for health <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    looks like you found out the true power of lerks the hard way. Most people dont relize but when 2 or more good lerks work together they can take down almost any number of marines and there expansions (with some healing). If you think lerks are bad now, thing of how much you'll hate them when they get mega improved in 1.01

    If you kept spending your res on turrets, of course you'd lose! Just spend it all on teching up, get a few guys with HA and welders, and the lerks won't be able to do a thing against you. Only bother with more than a couple when you have too much res to spend. You've got loads of fast spawning vanilla marines to suicide on them, so use those to defend the bases. Get up to level 3 armor and weapons ASAP, and you'll win. Money spent on turrets is money thrown away. A shotgun costs less than a turret, and should get way more milage.

    funny story about this one

    I was a lerk, a gorge built me inside a defence chamber, im not sure, but I think i was invisible(eg, totally inside the chamber)

    3 HA marines started to crawl up (weilding eachother and weild to death the O-towers, i bit the rear one's head off, then the 2nd, the last ran for his life, but i picked him off with spikes before he rounded the corner

    next was the waves of "omgz hax" ;-)

    Man, use gspy or +connect and ip to load up games.
    Because if you lose your sound from alt-tabbing out, or forgetting to put an away message on aim and that one idiot that never has anything to say ims you, All you would have to do is hit escape, then r for resume and your good as new. I dont know if you can salvage your sound if playing from the ingame server finder.

    Yeah, i posted the same thing some time ago. If ALiens got only 1 Hive, its the best to go Lerk, as Res should be no problem and Lerks with Armor are better than Skulks: You can still bite and can fly away much faster and combined Spikes RULE.

    One thing I really love about 1.04 is that comebacks are soo possible now. If they secure two hives, but no real nodes...you can actually out rp them as kharaa. Combined Lerk teams can just destroy teams of marines...and lerk hit and run is very nasty also.
