Do I need a microphone to listen to what people say on voice comms? Or can I just download the client, run it and listen to what people say.

you need a mic if you want to speak, but you can hear everyone without a mic.

There's no plug-in voicesoft client that I know
Third-party, yes but those are for groups of people who know each other
