Handy Hints For Skinmeshing Required

As a nice safe little project to do while I learn to model I made a new jetpack (kind of somewhere between a 40k jump pack and a mech thing, I guess), but I'm finding getting the UV map rather difficult. I could probably do it myself bit by bit, but I'm wondering if there are any hints people can give me to speed up the workflow, increase efficiency, stop me screwing up, &c. I'm limited to MS3D for assignnig texture coordinates though, unless anyone can recommend a good free/shareware program to use.

    Milkshape aint too bad at skinmeshing, check some of the tutorials lying around <a href='http://www.polycount.com' target='_blank'>http://www.polycount.com</a> , lots of help there...

    ....or, if you want, i'd give it a try for ya..

    I like that!!! I can't offer any advice other than tilting the model, then remapping from whichever side gets all the back vertexes lined up at least visibly on the texture screen, but I like it anyway.

    Thanks for the comments, chaps. Eventually I found this rather handy little free program which, with a little fiddling here and there, can make nice meshes to work from.

    To show how handy it is, since it seems like people might not know it too well, here's the not-quite-perfect-but-it'll-do map it made for me:

    I thought LithUnwrap wasn't available anymore, but thanks for that! I'd been looking for it!

    So did I, so I was pleased as punch when I found that link ... in the "modelling 101" thread I copied over from DoD.

    Next time I'll read my own posts first. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Ha! I didn't read it either. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I wasn't doing anything at the time that I felt I had questions about.
