I'm no expert on satelitte connections, but I think you're going to need a crossover cable to run from the PC to the router.

I would've figured that the modem would plug directly into the router, but if it's USB only... that's new to me.

At my house (not my apartment), we've got a wireless/hard line cable connection that's really sweet. You have to be on a PC for good upload speeds, of course, but it's nice being able to get outside on one of the laptops every once in a while.

well, the main hassle at this point is the fact i need to know if i run ICS through the crossover cable to the router will it work? or will i have to use a switch or hub- they also have a 10/100mbit switch 8port...........who knows i just want to get this working....

Well, in most cases, the ICS goes directly from the router to the modem. In your case, though, with the modem going through the PC, you may have a problem.

The crossover cable should support ICS, but it's probably going to be considerably slower when you've got multiple computers accessing the internet at the same time.

You should look to see if the satellite company provides other modems (again, I don't know much about satellite connections, so I may be way off) that don't need USB and can plug directly into the router. The modem is causing all of your problems, at the moment. If it just went through the router like a normal one, you wouldn't have to worry about the crossover having collisions.

I have the exact same setup. Well, almost anyways. I have a telephone dsl line with a wireless network in my house. I used one computer with the dsl modem in it as the gateway, and connected that gateway to the router via cat15 (ethernet) cable. The problem with satillite communication is that it could conflict with your wireless network. If it doesn't, great! Anywho, I hope this helps.

lol cat15? typo...nah, ah so use a crossover ok check, router should work with ics but may have collisions-
ok i seen somewhere on the net that they make a router version of the modem, but that would require replacing the modem which sucks. i doubt the wireless 802.11b would conflict, i think you can have more then 1 wireless nets but have them on different channels oh well.....

Er sorry, this isn't really about the problem in this thread. Except I don't think the satellite connection will interfere with your wireless. I don't believe you transmit anything much with a satelllite link, you just receive. But I really don't know much about it.
My question is, does anyone have any experience setting up pptpd (PopTop) on a 2.4 kernel router. I get a GRE read or write failed error and cannot connect to it. I've looked at everything, and cannot figure it out. I think its some problem with forwarding the GRE packets (opened on firewall, and we're not getting any dropped packets). If anyone has any experience of this and would like to help, tell me and I can send the logs/config files.
Its unlikely I know, but I hoping its worth a try.
