Um, Gotta Question

Ok I am getting a very good grasp of Hammer and have already created a Maine spawn with several hallways and such leading out and know the basics of HL mapping. My concern involves NULL textures. I already know that placing the "NULL" texture is used for detailed brushes such as pipe ends and light fixtures that don't exactly touch the inside of the world(one unit), blah blah blah. I was wondering, why after I place null textures I still get the same W_polly readings when using R_speeds 1? I though that placing null textures made those polygons not render. I also heard that placing the "null" texture on light fixtures attached from ceiling will make those polygons not visible to commander mode, but when I am in commander mode I can actually see the blue "null" texture on top of the light fixture. As I understood, putting null textures on brushes helped improve R_speeds. So why Am I still getting the same number of W_pollies when facing a certain part of a corridor with pipes and brushes that have Null on them?

I also know that I can set the lightfixtures as "func_seethrough" so that the commander doesn't have an obstructed view but I am getting a little confused about the null texture. Also I know that the "sky" texture is mainly used on brushes so that they show the skybox but what would be the difference if I were to use the "sky" texture on brushes apposed to the "null" since they can't be seen by the player anyway. What is the performance difference and does it matter?

it seems you are using old compile tools. I suggest you use Merls compile tools which I believe are somewhere in the ns folder.

yah, no. it wasn't a joke. Merl's custom ZHLT build. you can download the most recent version over at www.valve-erc.com which might be a version more recent than the one included with the NS download, if one was even included in the ns download.

Mouse I greatly apologize. The reason I thought you were joiking was because I already had Zoners tools, but only now I just found out that a newer release was available. 1.7build. I get jumpy on the NS boards, I'm sorry for being a ****. And thanks guys for pointing this out for me. Now the null texture included with the latest build is working flawlessly and is reducing my W_pollies by 30-50+. And I though I was doing something wrong, I kinda was by not having the latest zoner tools. Cheers
