Sensitivity

<div class="IPBDescription">Mouse</div> Well, I've been wondering... Ever since somebody asked what sensitivity people used in-game, and with people saying 2-5... then I calmly said that I use a sensitivity of 12... and getting laughed at horribly.. i wonder why people have their sensitivity set to

I tried 3 and found it ridiculously SLOW... 12 is pretty fine, I don't have a problem with it at all.... i guess some people do, however.

You cannot compare your sensitivity to other people like that. How sensitive a sensitivity of 5 is in game depends on what your sensitivity in windows is set to so a sensitivity of 10 for one person could be as sensitive as one of 5 for another person. I myself use 15.

Didn't think window's sensitivity made a difference, mep.

I use max sensitivity in windows, with no acceleration.

Well it depends on that and a few other factors, probably type of mouse and drivers etc. I'm not really sure since I'm no computer whiz.

What sensitivity you have is purely personal preferance.

Broadly speaking, a low sensitivity will help you aim at long ranges, a high sensitivity will be helpful when you have to turn multiple times and quickly against a close range skulk.

Also, if you have acceleration on in windows, it wil effect your mouse movement.

I used to have 7/8 as sensitivity in most HL games. Then I purchased an expensive logitech mouse that wrecked my sens and now I use 3 in sens... It depends heavely on device/drivers/OS, so it is pointless to discuss about it.

I've seen good players using higher and lower sens than me... I guess that's why I am teh crap <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

I also use a high sensitivity... somewhere between 12 and 15. It does sometimes make precise aiming difficult, but since I've always had high sensitivity in FPS games, I've gotten used to it. I like the advantage of being able to spin around with a mere flick of the wrist, especially in a game like NS where ennemies come at you from all sides.

The buddies of mine that I've introduced to FPSes over the long years usually set their sensitivities a bit lower, usually never over 11, but still that's higher than some peeps.

Note that sensitivity can be set via the console command "sensitivity x" (where x is the new sensitivity, or omit to see current sensitivity). This, for example, lets people make scripts that keep the sensitivity high when prowling around and quickly drop it when they want to snipe. I tried using a script like that for good ol' Quake III, but I just couldn't get the hang of the way the sensitivity changed. I kept it at high all the time, and my sniping didn't suffer.

I am so freaked by that. I can't use below 18, and generally live on 20.

But I make small movements generally, but I love it. And it lets me breakdance-spin <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

DoD changed my mentality on sensitivity. Since I'm get so tense in these games (if I hear so much as a foot step I get antsy) I have to keep my sens low or else I'll tense up in a fight and totally overshoot my opponent. Lower sens also helps when going for headshots (works well in CS too). I keep about the same sens for NS marines but never really gave it much thought as aliens since there's not much precise aiming involved with any of the classes. Heh, I like that; just being able to run up and maul pathetic humans. Then again, maybe a different sens could help my lacking skulk skills...

my sensitivity is 5 with the Windows sens set at 2 ticks down from the center, for me its a balance between be able to hit the long range shot, and be able to aim in close, however sensitivity is based on comfort, some people might find this to be very well, some people might find it too fast or too slow.

The key is too have accuracy as well as speed.

I know mine is ridiculous to some, but it's just what you're used to, I guess.

It seems work well, and means I rarely allow anyone to get more than a shot on me before I can face them, which helps a lot when combined with decent sound.

I tried 15/12/8, just to see what you guys had it like, and it damn near killed me, but I s'pose others would feel the same way. Each to their own... <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

solve all of your aiming/moving problems

    buy and learn to use a track ball <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
I keep my sensetivity around 6 (well 6.6)

I can do hideously fast turns (rember I only have to move my thumb a max of 1 in. to do a 360*)
I can am very precicely (lower sens plus nible thumb)
and I can make fast aims for when in clowser (again the 1in thing)

    try it out

you will probably hate it at first but you will soon learn

it also meens that you can have the 1in for covering all of windows <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

I use a Logitech Marble Track Ball or whatever you call it. I've been using it for over a year now it works great. I use a higher sensetivity in Ns that I did when I played CS, mostly because NS is melee fighting so quick turning is needed.

I used to use a trackball, dunno, just got over it. It WAS cool though, and I suggest everyone tries it once.

  • ArchzaiArchzai Join Date: 2002-11-10 Member: 8007Members
rofl i tried keyboard for CS for 20 minutes.. couldn't even get one kil... the turning on the keyboard is way to unprecise.. rofl

well i use different sen for different games

CS: 3.... its perfect for me now.. i can turn.. do close range shooting.,... precise aiming from far away.. i used to use 2.. it was way too slow...

DoD: jus started 2 days ago.. i use 5.. it seems good

    NS: used to use 10.. but way too crazy.. i use 6-7 now.. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

HL: 10 rofl.. that game NEEDS fast sens......

I am with shockwave. I stay on 20. Adjusting to a higher sensitivity allows you to perform better at every range, just at short range first though.

I have a Logitech optical wireless with acceleration on low, and I use a sensitivity of 6.5... I tried 7 and somehow it made the mouse freak out and turn insanely fast.. don't know why.

HL mouse settings, windows mouse settings, acceleration, type of mouse, additional changes such as PSrate, even your OS all alter your mouse movement seperately to sensitivity.

You can't accurately compare sens numbers with another person, the only real way to compare is how many 360s you do when moving the mouse horizontally across an average size pad, and even that is meaningless if you use any form of mouse accel.

For referance, i can get about 5-6 360 turns across my everglide giganta, with maccel as minimal as i can get it.

On the subject of maccel, i've tried fiddling every setting i can find and still can't find anyway to properly get rid of it in HL under WinXP. My sens in quake is fine, but despite trying registry fixes, every windows setting for mouse movement, and several HL commandline arguements i still can't get it how i want it. The commonly quoted fix actually manages to give me inverted maccel instead of turning it off.

    wow, high.

I use 3 sens, and in like CS, I use 1.2!

In another mod, SI(science and industry) I use 4.4!

I played TFC after not playing it for a long time, and the sens was on 3.333333blahblahblah.. I could not understand how I ever played on such a low sensitivity. But then, that was with my old ball mouse (by old I mean 9 years), and you kinda had to have low sensitivity cause it always got stuck and you had to jerk it to get it unstuck.. and doing 400 spins getting your mouse unstuck isn't good <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

I always wonder why people post topics like that. If you're comfortable with a sens of 15 then why change it to 8 just because mr 1337 player uses that ? what's next? A post your config post ?

Yeah, turning off accel in Windows isn't working for me either. But, are you sure you tried
    "-noforcemparams -noforcemaccel -noforcemspd"
as additional command line parameters for HL ? It works for me ... (i have WinXP too)
