Make Everything Outrageously Expensive...

That would be fun. Fighting over RT's. Double the resource cost of everything in the game and make the sides fight for RT's. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

This would be a great idea for when they take out the hive-autokill and make it so that camping aliens die after 20 hours....

Ironically, this would probably result in all marine teams immediately hive rushing....

The goal here may be to encourage people to go after the RT more, but it would backfire badly.

Starting marines are superior to starting skulks. If starting equipment is all anyone can ever afford, then the marines are going to have the advantage for too long.

What actually would happen is the Skulks would eventually get hunted back to their base and eliminated by the marines, every time.

Generally, in RTS games I like starting multi-player with low resources, when you have a ton of resources to start out with, it pretty much comes down to who can build and send out their army the fastest, and I don't think of RTS games as a competition of who can click fastest, but of who has the best strategies and can best adapt to their opponents strategies.

Unfortunatly, being a hybrid FPS/RTS, Natural Selection would not benifit from starting with less resources. Since units do not cost resources, you are really only slowing down the gameplay by making the resources less valuble, and NS games can get to be quite long as it is. If you made everything really really expencive, you would just see more games end at the 1 hive level (skulks finish off marine base, or marines rush alien hive) and no one would ever get upgrades.

I think the pace at which a game of NS goes is pretty much right on the mark, but if anything, they would make it faster, not slower. I know leagues like CAL are concerned about how long the matches take, and I could only see changes that would make matches take less time because of this.

Oh, and I agree that NS is a battle for resources. You don't see it that much in pub games, because they are so disorganised, you don't have every player on a team working for the team, each player has their own idea of what needs to be done to win, the aliens on pub games are usually at a huge disadvantage if the marine commander is good, because they pretty much have to do what the commander wants, and his strat is what gets carried out. Definatly, pub games usually come down to a battle for the hives, when I command on public servers, I find it to be much easier to win if I try and control two of the hives. I'm much more comfortable with having my marines guard and defend a location then sending them on offencive missions, like attacking a hive. The simple truth is that most pub marines cannot pull off the kind of teamwork it takes to do a hive rush, or any other kind of offencive mission unless they have Heavy Armor and HMGs. I think when more and more of the NS community has a better grasp on the game, and as the game gets more balanced from patching, you will see more and more fighting over the resources, and less fuss over controlling the hives.
