    Not too bad, lighting looks a little bit too even and it feels empty tho. Its a good start.

    Requiem - Would hanging wall lights (Especially in the access corridor) make the map a little better?
  • Lord_RequiemLord_Requiem Join Date: 2002-11-20 Member: 9481Members
    Don't evenly space your lighting as much, if you want an area evenly lit then crank the lights which are covering the room way down so there is a semi dark evenly lit layer, then add pointlights or small bright texture lights to highlight areas. Shadows = Good.

    You sure you're a newb at mapping? Cuz this is quite good imho.

    Just gotta fix some of the ligthing features like in the first shot.
    Don't put a long strip of white light like that.

    and you've got many different lighting colors going around like in the 4th shot.. feels like the walls are blue, yet the light is red.

    Oh and i truely dig the last shot.
    I dunno why.. but it's sexy.

    Yeah the last shot looks very cool, even though it's very simple. I think it's the light coming up through the gratings around the edge that makes it look sweet.

    As for the rest, I think they're solid, but the lighting needs some tweaking. It looks like white lights are casting red light in some of the shots. It really kills the atmosphere when there is light coming from an unseen source, or an incorrectly colored source.

    Great work otherwise!

    i like the blue walls <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    give the map a different look than the others <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I thought about the lighting guys. If I put some grating over those long white lights and cut them out for a length of 128 / 128 / 128 do you think it would look a little "sleeker"?
  • Lord_RequiemLord_Requiem Join Date: 2002-11-20 Member: 9481Members
    Chop out a small section instead and increase the intensity of it. It looks much better, trust me, I did the same thing you're doing when I started andromeda, I thought panels of lights would look really neat, but its better to have lights that highlight areas.

    hmmm... too repetitive for me... try variying the enviroment. the lighthing seems good to me for a begginer. not too dark, not too bright. but the wall get reaaally boring hehehe <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Hey heres some more screenshots, it invlolves the implementation of tweaked lighting. I am also showing off the alleged "sexy room" because well, I need help with the ceiling; it isn't sexy at all.(Sexy room ceiling featured below)

    Another . . . You may notice I took one red spotlight away and moved another nearer a door
  • RevenantRevenant Join Date: 2003-01-13 Member: 12249Members
    Last one atm. I hope requiem is happy with the lighting tweaks, although. What can I stick on those damned walls except for pipes?
  • BytorBytor Join Date: 2002-11-19 Member: 9323Members
    Looks like you still have red light coming from nowhere ... if that's the effect you want, then tell me to shut up. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> I just think it looks out of place.

    Otherwise, looks schweeeeet.

    I said earlier I was adding lights in, this is merely like a style test. To make sure they go, as someone earlier said the red was placed to "even"

    Looks very nice. Although I suggest maybe a light above that "sexy" room door?
  • BlackPantherBlackPanther Join Date: 2002-02-11 Member: 197Members
    NO!
    Keep the "sexy room" as is.
    Even raise the roof up a little.
    It's nice and dark.. and a PERFECT ambush spot for a <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/skulk.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='skulk.gif'><!--endemo--> ! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
    You could put gurders up there if all else fails.

    I like the fact youre a dark mapper, not enough of you guys.
    Gives it a Gloom feel, where you might NEED a flashlight.
    It's a good step away from the tanning booths realeased
    all the time.
  • RevenantRevenant Join Date: 2003-01-13 Member: 12249Members
    I'm trying to keep a contrast in lighting going on in the map. Yeah many places will be dark and gloom, not far from these screenshots is a hive entrance. One way which I will try to make hives distinguisable is by adding slightly brighter lighting from one entrance. Oh and black panther, I don't think you can see that very dark vent in the "sexy" room can you?
    Grotamank, just exactly what do you mean by "tannig booths"?
