Ok i got a server up and running YEE HAW. Everything seemed good but, wait of course somethings broken lol. Ok so what happens is when you try and connect it says something like "This server requires WON authenticatio, could not obtain WON auth...." so im wondering whats going on.

Heres my hardware:

Linksys 4 port switch with ports 27000 - 28000 open in both UDP and TCP forwarding to right host

900mhz Athlon
768 RAM
Blah blah blah

I would guess its something to do with the router but i just dont know hmm. Well if you can help i would forever ben in your debt, or if you can offer a place that may beable to help me thats most welcome too.

Thanks,

does this happen when you try to connect to other servers ?

I've had a computer at school that W32.Klez infected and one of the first things I noticed is that my halflife started getting an authentication error and kept wanting to update.

For reference, I installed HL from the same disk using the same code on two different machines - one to use solely as a server and one to play from. Of course, you can download HLDS separately anyway and HLDS does not require won authentication, hence I have no problem connecting to my server using the same CD-key, because the server doesn't use a CD-key.

I guess that means I have to ask - is it a legal copy of HL? If your version of HL is not a retail one (CS-retail or Half-Life retail) then go out and buy one of the above and get a proper CD-key If it is retail, then it's possible, though unlikely, that someone else is using your same CD-key. Ensure you've not given the box to anyone to install HL, if you have you'll have to get them to uninstall (or buy their own and change the CD-key in the registry).

That probably hasn't clarified anything though

I assume you're running a dedicated server not a listen server? Listen servers DO use your CD-key so you won't be able to play HL or any mod at all while the llisten server is running (listen server is where you can play on the serevr machine, but given NSs' complexity it'd probably be SOOO SLOW!!)

Sorry if I've gone way too basic, just a good idea to check the easy things first
