ok so I'm teaching myself how to use quark *(i dont like hammer) and how to map for NS in general. I made a room, put all the needed (i think) entities to atleast join the game and run around. I've got a info_player_start, team_command, info_mapinfo, 2 info_team_starts (one for each race), and a team_hive. I did the quick go thing, started up fine, i can join aliens or marines just fine but:
1. can't do damage to either hive or command console
2. can't build anything
I also have another question. I put a resource nozzle in the map just to check it out. If i join the marines, the nozzle has a marine RT on it. If I join the aliens the nozzle still has a marine RT on it. What decides what the starting nozzle is for each team?

A 1) You cannot do damage until a game has started, so you have to have one player from each team. They don't want someone to chomp the CC until it's down to 1 hp, then have a marine join and be screwed.
A 2) Same as answer 1. they don't want you to cap all the res nodes and build up huge bases in the hives and then put a siege outside (or inside) each hive so the kharaa players are screwed as soon as they join.
Both answers can be put the other way (i.e. marines killing hive before the alien starts, alien building 900 offense and defense chambers and webbing the entire level before a marine gets in. It's just built into the game.
If you have a lan, create the game, and get in the game from another comp as well. Have each comp on a different team. This will allow you to test your map's playability (generally).
As for the nozzle, I haven't figured that out. probably how close it is to the cc vs the hive
Widowmaker -CFH- : distance decides in 1.0 wich ress belongs to wich CC or hive.
there are some improved ns.fgd files were you can determine the start ressource place in the entity settings.
Example: hl.exe -dev -console -sw -game ns +map ns_caged -maxplayers 32
(-sw stands for "startwindowed")
