Invading Alien Habitats

<div class="IPBDescription">Idea for a map!!</div> I've read a few discussions here asking "why don't the marines go after one of the alien colonies rather than just kicking them off the TSA bases?". Obviously, the biggest response is that there would be no nanotech in alien homeworld type of setting.

Then I started thinking about how to integrate the two ideas - a heavily alien-infested colony area, and still including nanotech. Here's what I came up with.

The setting is a TSA bioweapons R&D facility (<i>hardly original, but bear with me</i> <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->). The storyline is that the TSA were able to capture several different breeds of Kharaa, and were researching them to gather more information on how they evolve, how the hivemind works, and so on. As would be expected, they escaped captivity, overran the facility, and killed everyone.

The distress signal sent from the facility wasn't received by the TSA until several months later. An initial response team was sent in and found the facility itself empty. There were numeous tunnels going into the ground, and orders were issued to investigate these tunnels. To maintain communications and supplies through the nanogrid while in the tunnels, "remote nanogrid repeaters" were installed. These repeaters can "wirelessly" extend the nanogrid, but will not operate if heavily damaged.

It turns out the Kharaa began creating their own colony, and went into a stasis-like state after their extensive tunneling to regain strength for the actual creation of colony-grade structures. The initial response team, after setting numerous nano-repeaters, accidentally woke up the comatose aliens. The Kharaa responded, and killed the team.

In comes the second wave of marines (<i>ie: us</i>). The repeaters are still operational, so the nanogrid extends well into the tunnels. More repeaters cannot be built, but the existing ones must be repaired if they get damaged.

The "damaged repeaters not working" idea could be scrapped, and just have them invulnerable. I figure if they were hard to damage, it'd add another element of gameplay to the game. Aliens could damage nano-repeaters near hives to prevent sieges, and marines would have to repair them before they could build in that area. I haven't really thought of how to implement the "damagable repeater" idea, so it might even be impossible. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Anyhow, that's my idea. I really don't think I'd be able to map it, so it's up for grabs if anyone wants to give it a shot. Even if it's just used as a base for further development, go ahead!! <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    sounds a lot like the story for aliens 2 <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

novel idea if it could be done right if you ask me. i'm always welcome to new stuff.

Actually, I was sorta going for a fairly generic story with a somewhat believable explanation as to why the commander can see/build while not in a TSA facility. The nano-repeaters are basically the only real idea, and the story was my rambling as to a possible scenario to use with it. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Actually, sounds almost exactly like starship troopers, but hey...

I was thinking of doing an invasion of the Kharaa homeworld, because this seem like a logical step, though maybe one that should wait to be released with NS2 (if such a thing ever happens). I never did think about the nanorepeaters though. The basic idea was to have a multitool adding heavy armor and hmg to each marine as they spawn, but the flip side is that the alien start with 2/3 hives, allowsing fades right off the start (a good idea given that this is a kharaa homeworld). Maybe The marines land in a ship (story), so that they spawn in the tiny dropship, allowing minimal building of defenses, and maybe the lack of ability to cap res nodes would just be overlooked, so marines could still cap them without repeaters. It's a huge stretch into a fantasy situation, but I think it's feasable, given time. All assaults by the marines would have to be ground assaults by heavies, but that's possible by limiting the ground the kharaa could build on (marshes, etc.). Maybe it would randomly spawn you with either jp or ha, and wither a gl/pistol combo, or a hmg/welder combo. That would be tight... also, with free weapons given, the need for marines res would diminish, as would the commander role..... Hmmmmmmmm. Feasable? Any ideas?

its possible to do this, I think you can make the repeaters weildible, or breakables, then have them trigger nobuild brushes when killed.... some crafty scripting you could have some nice stuff... too much for me to try.

Id like to see an alien map, prob best views of alien map would be lots of slime and water. as ive found in practically all the maps, the hives are in moist cool areas with water or water filtered areas. have a infested marine facility covered with slimish areas and broken places everywhere with blown water pipes leaking water everywhere, half the lights dont work because of the surge when the water pipes blew causing fuses in many areas which now lay dark, *at least the marines will use their torches more* and plenty of venting spots made by aliens for fast moving around. sorta like the venting of ns_nancy.

    How bout this:

through researching the kharaa the tsa came up with a new technology that acted like bacterium, but was non-organic. like they could pump it into cave and it would spread out as far as it could go and it could calculate whether or not it was on a cieling. Then when it was finished it was a giant nano-conducting web thingie that acted like the networks in human facilities.

The story would need some more technical accuracy. I'm no scientist.

    heres a story idea.

The studies from scientists, making new weapons for battling began testing the creatures on a planet a few lightyears from earth, the testings began to be quite successful as they were able to make the new lab creatures called khaara do many things, the tests began to go out of hand when their khaara gorg built a hive in its enclosure, thus there was an outbreak as all the khaara skulks evolved into larger more stronger battlers called fades, thinking this was a succsessful breakthrough they began to test the fades but as they went to transferr the fades to testing they began to attack and destroyed the facilities releasing the other khaara who rushed to destroy everything which would stop them to get free.

The Facility now on the planet now destroyed left a emergency distress call to a nearby space ship for help to kill the new species which is now classified a faliure as the creatures are not tame and act by their own will even after being held in captivity their whole life, they are too intelligent to train.

The Distress call received by the ship, rc-223 then sent the message to a marine facility to send troops to the planet to now destroy the new species before it found a way to a new planet to destroy and spread.

,,,, just a thought for the story of the map. thats all....
