Look, I'm introducing myself!
In a random and completely unrelated topic to anything else, Hi! I'm |Speed 2| Dave.
I found out about Natural Selection thanks to those GREAT guys at Penny Arcade and have been following its progress for the last few months (since mid-October). I started playing the game hours after it came out and fell in love. Although I don't play NS as much as I play CS, I still enjoy the game a lot. I think it would be better if people would try new strategies or think of how to counter things instead of whining about how impossible it is to counter such and such as either an alien or marine.
What else? Oh yes, I started playing FPS's in a very round-about way. The first FPS I played (and utterly destroyed) was Wolfenstein3d, and after being disgusted with the genre I never played another one for many years. I come from an RPG family (My brother and I love RPGs, ala Dragon-Warrior or the Exile Trilogy) and never played a FPS that I liked until I discovered a Marathon 2 demo online. I loved the game, and eventually I bought it (from the Mac Action Pack sold by the great company Bungie, makers of Halo and Halo2(I think).) I loved this game so much, especially the multiplayer, which I forced my friends to play a lot. After Marathon, I found out about this new PC game coming out called Half-Life about some scientist who has to do more than just shoot to get out of his bad situation. That sounded like fun! Too bad I never played it until I played Counterstrike in late 2000 at a friend's house in Germany
As for Online games, I have been playing online games for quite some time. My brother and I often played against each other over the phone lines (we had two in our house for quite some time) a hearty game of Warcraft 1. Boy was it fun to line those warriors and archers up in the perfect alignment, only to have them get crushed by a nasty catapult. "There can be only one"!! muahaha. I soon found out that cheats are bad; I got beaten up many a time for using a cheat Later on We played Warcraft 2 not only against ourselves, but friends in the area who had PeeCees, too! That was neat for a while, but I get tired of having to lose to my brother (read: he's bigger than me ) Eventually, in 1996, a game called Avara came out that you could play over the Internet! It was my answer to not having to pay a ridiculous amount for a game that had been out for a long time (ahem, mechwarrior 2) for PeeCees that Macs could just now play. It is a very cool arcade game where you run around, try to blow up your opponent while trying to stay in one piece. There's more strategy to that (so it wasn't just a doom clone) and had very neat-o 3d graphics and a spiffy Physics engine. The simplistic nature of the game made Internet play (over a 14.4 modem!) simple and I rarely had pings over 1000 (or even 600) unless playing on Australian servers.
I have been playing CounterStrike for about 5 months now, ever since I started going to school (and got my first PeeCee). I never knew that an awesome mod called Natural Selection existed, nor did I care, because I had never really considered getting Halflife until I found out that my laptop could run it great. When I found out, I bought HL and played CS like a crazed schoolboy (and kept a 3.5 GPA for my first quarter.)
I think that covers it, hope it helps you guys understand my points of view a little better on Game issues. I am not your standard twitch shooter. I started twitch-shooters when I was 16 and have only regularly played them for 5 months. I'm still learning some things, but I'd like to consider myself pretty good in any game I pick up and play. Being in college means that I understand that there are better people than me out there, smarter people, and different people. I also understand that it means I am wrong most of the time, but that sharing my experiences can lead to others learning from my previous errors. I also would like to think of myself as a good team-player (read: educated).
Postnote: ah yes, my name. Many people, after getting pwned by me, or after I show them a better way of doing something, ask me if Speed 2 is a clan. You could call us that, but we are far from a clan. We are much closer personally and physically than most clans will ever get: we're floormates on Speed 2 of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. One of my floormates actually belongs to a clan (clan 420, 66.151.108.68 is their public CS server, a server I frequent because they used to be a lot better than me, now they're just better) and the rest are just fun to play games with. I chose the name Speed 2 for my online gaming because that was the easiest way for me to identify myself on lan games and out of convenience I never changed it for online gaming. Thus, Speed 2 Dave is born.
There, was that off-topic enough for ya?
