I Hope This Gets Better In The Future

The pings
When simply running around the server, I have a ping around 150-200 with choke 20. But as soon as a battle starts, pings get up to 500+ and choke to 90-100. A lot of other persons have the same problem. Isn't there a possibility of optimizing that in future versions?

As soon as you figure out C++ and how HL's network exchange works, and then how every system every made handles the data HL and NS send it, and the you figure out how to optimize all that to every machine, (which involves rewriting most of the HL engine) you let flay know, and I'm sure he'll let you solve the problem.
Until then, play and shut up, or don't play and shut up.
It has been stated time and time again that NS has high server requirements. If server admins insist on running servers on computers who's CPU can't handle it, it's the server admin's fault.
I run an NS server for clan scrims occasionally on a Duron 800. It's a 12 player server, and so far the pings have never been unreasonable. However, the Duron 800 is right on the edge, because fully loaded on certain maps the minimum ping becomes ~100ms (as in people playing on a LAN get that). Still fully playable, but getting close...
Kali, what kind of connection, PC , OS are you using have you played other Half-Life mods on-line recently such as CS, DoD, TFC? Did they gove you similar problems? Finally what servers are you playing on and which country are you connecting through, US, UK, France, etc...?
basically I, and many others who use broadband can easily get sub 100ms pings for an entire game. It appears though that your ping is affected by the demand put on your PC and graphics card and isn't all that good to begin with.
This could be as simple as a poor or low powered CPU (say Cyrix or K6-2) combined with 'not very good graphics' like on board or PCI, TNT/Voodoo1 ATI Rage ? and/or using a 56k win modem...
In short - NEED MORE INFO.
As for the rest, despite college experience in C++, network code is not my area of expertise in the games industry.
- My CS and DoD Pings are around 100
- The high NS pings are on most of the servers I play on, except my own one. I hoped to get any ideas to have better connections to all servers [ optimized configs or changes with the next NS version ).
Let's get one thing straight:
I don't care if it was sarcasm. I don't care if it was serious. I don't like seeing people flaming, screaming at, or otherwise turning this board into a cesspool.
I hate to say this, but Porp brought up a GREAT point... Forum Mods shouldn't get too involved in posts, IMHO. Some positions sure, but the thick sarcasm should be rarely used, if at all, regardless of how stupid or n00bified a topic is. If it's that bad, lock it, don't go making a double standard for us and you (the mods).
otherwise I think this is just a guy trying to boost his posts with a flame war.. and nobody's stopping him (aka is continuing the flamey nature of this thread)
Three cheers for those who can play on dial-up.
Me i cant stand dial-up, my pings r usually 50 -150 in 20 man server. lag free for me.
However, don't characterize me as some meany bullying newbies, because that's not the case. If anything, he has more posts than I do.
You would be the one doing that.
Will that get me banned?
Servers and servers admins are not the problem. Many people (the majority of broadband users) get sub 100ms pings IF they pick a good server. Tell us what hardware you are using so we can work out what sort of response you should be getting and if there are any configuation settings that might help.
To help pick a fast server there is dedicated software that does a better job that the rather dated Half-Life interface - have a look at GameSpyArcade. GSA will show you the exact ping to a server before you join, it's fairly painless to install and set up and contains no nasty stuff (no spyware etc) just a few adverts to help pay for it!
porp, rob and others,
Please stop flooding this thread with shite. You've all made your opinions clear and they are no longer relevent to the topic. If you want tocarry on the discusion please do it on another thread. Time to return to the matter at hand.
