How Many

10mb connection (plently of bw anyway)

900mhz Athlon
256mb ram (can upgrade to 512mb if it'd help greatly)

How well would this run NS, if it's solely dedicated to running NS and the OS (the os will be tweaked, so everything unnecessary will be turned off - windows 2k/xp)

what im asking is, how many players could it hold, without the server increasing everyones pings

10-12 players max. your pipe is good, your proc licks balls.

you should be fine w/ 10-12 players for the time being. it's not so much the amount of RAM that you have, but rather the speed of your computer with Natural Selection. if you wanted, you could add another 256MB stick of RAM w/o changing anything else, but there would be no noticable difference. HL will only use about 256MB of RAM max. processor speed is a necessity, however, and you're lacking in it.

What both of the other guys said is very true. I'd almost say the CPU is more important than the bandwidth for NS, but that wouldn't make much sense as you can't host a 20 player server off a 56K connection

I have a 1.1GHz Thunderbird Athlon CS server and I ran a 16 player NS v1.0 server off of it (I took the CS server down temporarily) and it lagged pretty bad after 12 or so people joined. This is under RedHat 8 by the way.

On the other hand, on the exact same connection, my workstation here which is a 2.4GHz P4 (specs in my sig), on WinXP can host pretty much any player size I want and players won't complain about lag _at all_. As the round goes on lag gets worse though pretty much no matter what your maxplayers is. This especially happens on bast, hera, and tanith. nothing and caged are pretty good lag wise, and nancy and eclipse are excellent ping-wise, even to the end of the map. These are purely my observations from playing NS practically nonstop since v1.0 on my server..

What CPU is needed then, for 16 players, safely stable pings?

on winXP? i'd say about 1.6Ghz should cut it just fine. But i'm not sure about that because i use linux (was short handed in 1.03, but flayra rocks and has fixed it in 1.04!!!)
