You People Are So Quick To Yell At People..

how are they going to learn?
I keep seeing people say "stupid n00b comm", or "vote them out", but how else are people going to learn what to do. I'm relatively new to NS, however I jump at the chance to be comm. if it available. Why? Because I am able to learn, not only the map, but how to be a proper commander. This game is still relatively new, and many new players are still coming in. Ns is far from new-player friendly, and people want to try out all aspects of the game.

I know that when I first started playing, I couldn't wait to jump into the Comm. chair. I finally got the chance, and we failed miserably.. actually much lower than miserably, however it taught me, not only the comm. interface, but many things that I need to work on.

However, I can understand an exception. If a new player doesn't listen to the marines giving him advice, or placing things randomly like a moron without even thinking, then you have every right to be angry. But when a new player tries to be a comm. and is trying hard to do what he is supposed to, dont start yelling at him or eject him. Its just a game.

The 'people yelling at the comm' situation is somewhat understandable. Commanding takes a certain amount of knowledge and ability, not just in how to drop buildings, but how to handle resources and keep the marines from being bored.

I was a hopeless, inexperienced commander once upon a time too (actually, I still am! ). I tried commanding once in-game, and realized there's a lot more to it than just dropping buildings and equipment. I fired up a local game, gave myself a few bots to boss around, then practiced a bit to get the hang of it. I still suck, but I'm sure I could do okay if I really had to.

Many players simply want someone who can at least handle commanding fairly well, rather than having some new recruit that just likes pushing the shiny buttons in the command console.

If I have enough to worry about besides keeping the marines entertained when I'm comming. Are you guarding a key point and bored because nothing is charging it? Good, we're winning. Excitement will find you eventually if your commander is doing his job... trust me.

Yeah LAN game with bots is good, also there are tons of great posts about Marine strategy in the tactics forum and in general discussion, search under build orders or strategy. Playing other RTS games before trying to COMM is a plus. If you can think in a top down format (C&C red Alert and such) COMMing becomes much easier.

On the other hand, com has the power to ruin the fun of the rest of the marines game. The way I learned was to just take com when nobody else would (you know, like when everybody stands around in spawn for five minutes saying "somebody go com I don't want to!"). Then if I lost I could always say: well, if you don't like it, get some balls and be com next round.

If I'm playing as marine, I'll take command only if nobody else will take it. I'll command until someone else wants to try their hand at it, at which point I'm usually quite pleased to be able to hop out of the seat and turn the safety off my LMG.

I just wish people would check the damn resources before they ask the comm for something.

Also it would be good if there was a map where the marines could see where the commander was so they dont sit and scream for something while the comander SLOWLY makes his way to wherver that marines is.

Slowly? Ya know you can just click an area on the commander map to jump to it right?

Anyway, I agree, people need to check the resources, and be aware of the overall plan, before asking for anything. (This of course requires that the commander keep his troops informed of his intentions, such as saving for a hive assult, upgrades, etc.)

I have no problem with newbie commanders, but the comm chair is NOT the place to learn the map. You can learn the maps as a grunt. You can even learn many tactics as a grunt. A newbie commander that has no plan, or doesn't know the map, shouldn't be in the chair. You should have at least played as a grunt on the map enough time to have some semblance of strategy for winning the map, before jumping in the chair.
