    a) Left Click on the buildings , then in the menu window u will see the upgrade options , dont click on the bottem right option or it will get rid of the building <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

b)scanner if to search area your men cant see , ie use it to find out what hive they have got , click on the equipment menu and then scan , then click where you want to scan it will show u hives/building/aliens

c)as commander? its possible and iv done it a few times but cant remember

    d) when u hear the radio say 'need orders' or need ammo press space bar

e)as of other stuff u will learn that the more you command , but a few tips , as soon as you can upgrade your armour to lvl1 because it means you can survive another skulk attack , only 1 but its saved me lods of times. Dont give out weapons just because people ask , if some1 says 'GIVE ME A SHOTGUN!!!!!!!' dont he will probs run off him self and die , if soem1 else says 'can i have a welder to welded vents to base?' i would always give them 1 if they know what there going to do with it.
Always cover the turret factory from all side's if there is a blind spot at the TF 1 skulk can take down ALL you turrets.

    thats about it <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> , but practise can make perfict

you can also just click the door or elevator itself. All areas that are yellow on the map can be clicked(there are exceptions, like the base lift in bast)

There are also multiple types of waypoints you can give to your marines after you've click and drag over top of them and then right click. Here are a couple of useful waypoint options:

    1) Right click on an unmade building will tell the marines "build structure at waypoint"

    2) Right click on another marine or made structure will tell the marines to "defend target"

    3) Right click on an incoming ALIEN, which will appear as a blue circle, and this will place a marker on the alien regardless of if they are cloaked or not!

I know there are a few more, but these are the most useful ones I use when Comming. Hope that helps!

    Thanks for this.

The mad thing is that I am far more familiar with advanced strategy for the marine group (from comm perspective), from reading the various forum threads, than I am with the actual button pressing when in the hot seat.

And these wallies that claim you never go comm as a n00b are simply wrong, except those that add "IF NO-ONE ELSE WANTS TO DO IT". As a competent grunt I would rather SOMEONE willing went comm, however poor a player, than no-one did. At least it gives you a chance. Who knows, a "proper" comm might join in the very next minute.

My main pieces of advice as a n00b comm are:
Explain that you are n00b and that you are trying your best. Check whether anyone would prefer to takeover, and repeat the offer when new people join. Everyone has always been understanding and helpful, I've never had a problem here.

Get someone to coordinate the ground team. It is often easier to follow the team, rather than lead them. Waypoints are all well and good, but are a pain to issue when you have guys running all over the place! Having a "sergeant" leaves you free to build stuff at sites they've already secured, plus gives them some leadership they can relate to.

Drop equipment and give the guys stuff to build. It doesn't matter at the end of the day how "strategic" this is, at least you are doing something that the troopers recognise. It doesn't matter because at the end of the day, with you at the comm, the team is probably dead anyway, so why not let the guys have some fun whilst they are dying - and whilst you are learning. And on your 2nd - or 102nd - attempt, maybe you will be good enough to comm effectively.

I reckon it's an absolute must to print off the maps, the little boxmap doesn't seem to have locations named on it. If these, and the marines' names, showed up when your mouse passed over them in the boxmap it would be a big help. Knowing the map as a grunt is of limited value when looking from above.

Being a com takes experience and playing time. So don't be afraid and keep on practicing. There are probably an infinite number of strategies out there so have fun and don't be afraid to try. But listen to experienced players because they will help you out.

One thing that I noticed if you are a com, is that it really helps if you have really good ping. If your connection sucks or your ping sucks it is really difficult to be a commander. That is why I hardly be a commander, since my ping always sucks. I wish they would have a Hawaii server...soon...

    and the most important thing:

if you hear them all start to say they are going to vote you out, make sure you drop 8 commander chairs and waste as much res as possible. that'll show em <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

Now lets not encourage that sort of thing. Most players aren't willing to give the Commander a chance even if he's new, but there are decent players out and if you do such a thing you'll most likely get their votes to kick you out of the chair.

Your Marines should trust you, just like you trust them even if it doesn't work in a victory, you'll be able to say, "Good game" at the end of the round.
