Are Sensory Chambers Working?

KMOKMO Join Date: 2002-11-07 Member: 7617Members
<div class="IPBDescription">Wot no yellow blobs...</div> In the last few games where sensory chambers have been put up (including one where we used the order S/M/D, still winning quite comfortably, admittedly outnumbering them), I have not seen them actually reveal the presense of ANY marines nearby, except those foolish enough to touch them.

Plenty of "the enemy approaches" shouts, but no indication as to where on the hivesight. Could this be the same 1.03 bug as the marines' motion tracking not working?

The sensory chamber has to actually "see" them, as in, like a line of sight. But if any marines are detected, either thru a wall or something, then it'll say the stupid "The Enemy approachs", including if buildings are there. That's why you'll hear it repititively over and over.

So is that a bug report then? The two should surely happen at the same time, whether it be line of sight or not.

Maybe it's an issue on linux servers, I'd have to check. It works perfectly on many servers and no, it doesn't need line of sight, it sees through walls. It's possible you put a sensory near a building since those don't show up on sight but do activate the alert.

I used sensory again today, as the first chamber. There were marines standing right next to them attacking them, and building turret factories, with no yellow circles at all.

    Share your sensory experiences...

I have a bad sensory story. Some twink went Gorge and spent ALL his resources (constantly) on sensory chambers, placing them on top of resource nodes when he found them. He literally had built at least 10 of them before we noticed what was happening. (After the first one we just figured we'd try the S/M/D method, it wasn't until I walked through the holoroom and saw that he had put them on the nodes and all over the room that we realized he was twinking on us.) It was then that I wished that Aliens could vote-force Gorges to go Skulk and not be allowed to go back to Gorge, like Marines can do to their Commander. The admin (playing as a Marine) wouldn't ban the guy either because "he wasn't hacking". Ironically, after we all F4'ed and they found and killed him, he did the cheat thing that lets him have a gun in the ready room. I should post his WonID, do we have a blacklist somewhere?

there was a cheaters and i say i post his wonid to all other server and know wats his reply ?? quote here " post as you like , i have other cd key and a cd key generator so you do you think i care ??"
    wat should we do ??

KMO - Were you in the room too? Because of course it doesn't display yellow circles for marines you can see with your own two eyes-in-throat.

And I've been in a game where sensory chambers stuck yellow circles on hivesight for marines that were outside of LOS, so... I dunno, maybe the chambers get moody and decide not to display circles sometimes.

THATS IT! Kavasa found the anwser!! Sensory chambers are FEMALE versions of offense chambers. They get jealous when you are paying more attention to the d chambers then them, and decide not to work!!

Er.. Anyways. I've rarely seen marines parasited by sensory chambers. Although "The Enemy Approaches" plays over and over and over, while the s chambers are nowhere near any marine structures or marines I could find.

I'd be willing to bet it's part of the linux issue. Try it in lan and you'll see how they should work.

I could have sworn the marine had to touch the sensory for it to parasite them. Or at least come very very close.

It does, but a marine doesn't have to be parasited for a sensory to show it on hive sight. It's temporary, when the marine leaves the range of the chamber, he leaves the hive sight as well. It works exactly like how an alien can see marines and they'll show up on the hive sight until he can't see them anymore. The only exception is that the sensory chamber can see through walls.

when an enemy structure/marine is within a certain range of sensory, then it says "the enemy approaches". when a enemy structure/marine is withing the chamber's line of sight then it shows up on hivesight as long as they are in the line of sight. when a marine TOUCHES a sensory chamber then they are parasited.

Heh, on linux servers hivesight seems to be broken. I onyl see yellow circles from parasite, nothing from other aliens or from sensories.

I've just had a thought - originally any marines or structures in line-of-sight of any alien were shown on the hivesight. But this caused far too many yellow blobs, so in 1.01(?), only structures that were parasited were shown. This also seems to apply to marines - you don't see marines that other aliens see (was this intentional?).

Now, maybe this change also inadvertently broke sensory chambers.
Maybe it's a more global problem - all marines in sight of either aliens or sensory chambers should be shown, but they haven't been since 1.01.

Yeah I got the feeling that's what it was parkah. No wonder I was seeing so many posts about the uselessness of sensory. Was scratching my head because I always make it my gorge duty to patrol chokepoints on the 3rd hive and dropping a sensory to spot those ninja marines and I see them just fine =D

MotionTracking never shows marines. It shows Hives and moving Aliens.
Although it is borked on Linux servers, thats planned for v1.04 to be fixed.
EDIT: its SUPPOSED to do that, but I have seen for myself times when it showed where webs was(very useful, but a bug), and a wall of lame as well... no idea what causes it.
