It's about everything leading up to that. A great game of NS can be had even if you lose. In fact, it's often just fine to lose after a well-fought, super-intense game, because you had fun anyways.
The "top clans" have it all wrong, and they aren't having any fun with their HMG rushes after 3 minutes to win the game. NS is about the midgame and the epic battles and the sheer thrill of having your butt chomped off by a skulk that you didn't see coming. It's not whether you win or lose, it's that you actually played the game.
NS should scare the hell out of you and leave you breathless at its best. No other game out there offers this level of intensity and makes you forget about the gameplay mechanics and focus on playing the game for fun. There will come a day when everyone can play like this and when every last game is a pitched battle to the death for that one double node or that one crucial hive. Till then, seek these kinds of games out when you can, because they are what this game was designed for and they are what kept the playtesters involved through innumerable changes and additions and subtractions (who remembers the Mini-Nuke?). They stayed because it was always immersive and intense (even when the skulk was 4 feet tall and couldn't move, and glided along above the ground). <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
mabye this will finally explain to alot of the CS'ers that winnng/score IS NOT everything. hell i get a kick out of getting my arse bitten off just cuz its so funny when you think about it, some guy sittin halfway across the continent just chomped the back of my head off... i mean, how cool is that!

Lots of people will tell you that it's all about the competition and the attempt of winning - I'll tell them to shut up and simply have a good time.
In the end, both demands have to be accepted and satisfied to make a game fun.
Some of my best games have been where I've been outnumbered, underpowered, being utterly crushed, and with the opposing marine team being in the game to have <i>fun</i>. There'd be times they'd rush in, kill everything but the last hive, then retreat. Even when they're obviously delaying their inevitable win, the game was still a blast for both teams.
Likewise when we're winning. I was in a game about 2 weeks ago, and it was almost as if my sole purpose was to kill this one player as many times as possible. I never evolved beyond skulk, but used all 3 upgrades. I never really kept track of his deaths, but it got to the point where the commander simply stopped giving him any guns or armor because it'd hit the floor within 2 minutes of leaving the base. He wasn't a bad player, I simply ambushed him when he never expected it (<i>although he should have after the 10th kill, hehe</i>). Even though this marine was getting ripped apart every time, he still had a blast in that game. He'd get me a few times, then I'd get him, and we'd be throwing taunts back and forth the whole time.
We won that second game, and I was actually disappointed to see it end. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
You can't do that in CS.
Your mother was a hamster, and your father smelt of elder berries!!
God i love that!
Arther: YOu have the holy grail?
Frenchman: Yes. Its VERY nice! ::truns to comrades:: I told him we already have one. ::giggles::
then We crushed them again without event, and I switched to marines and lost.
next map was great too, the marines got into the engine room hive (as aliens we were playing with them, like our own zoo of humans!) and they build a nice base, but after a solid wave of xenocide we got them <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
How do you know she's a witch?
She turned me into a newt!
...
A newt?
Well I got better...
What do you burn besides witches?
