Fog?

a question at all the mappers over here

is it possible to skript if there is a hive (or is build) there would be some fog all over the floor?

not much fog
lets say half a skulk high and not very dense
like the hallway in hera near the marine start point

this will add some very cool mood <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    that volumetric openGL fog is sometimes buggy when used with ns and its not a good idea to use it because of the size and r_speeds of NS maps and because its only visible in OpenGL mode.
    An atmospheric mod like NS should not have less atmosphere in software mode, and this will happen when you use much volumetric fog.

    Instead of volumetric fog use a particle field or big transparent "dust-decals" like its done in most official maps.

    yeah thats what i meant <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    but i dont have the times to make maps so this was thought as a idea to make maps even cooler <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Yes, you could use the flags in the hive entity to trigger a particle system, turning on/off the fog on the floor.

    see the thing with the fog entity in NS is that you only see it when your in it, so you'd not actualy see the fog rolling along the floor, you want that do a particle system, target the system with the hive's "on spawn" and target it again to kill it with the hives "on death" <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    hope that helps merry Christo's!

    I've had to cut the floor covering fog from one of my maps because the transparency calculations were too CPU intensive using the particle system.

    From the testing I have done the hive activation trigger is buggy too (can get out of sync).

    I wish I had better news for you.

    Or you can do what some of us are doing and map with a open GL video card in mind. I did a walkthrough of a few of the release NS maps and its impossible to even play them correctly because they look so ungodly bad. If you don't have SOME kind of 3d accelerator you shouldn't be playing computer games like half life. I'd be willing to bet that less than 2 percent of people who play NS or any other HL mod use software mode, and don't point at internet polls because those are easily wrong. I play halflife every day and I have yet to meet ONE SINGLE PERSON who uses software mode. I ask occasionally too, and I never get an answer:

    "My pc has a tseng labs 2d card back from when there was no windows 95, so I cant play with 3d hardware"

    NS was made in 2002, not 1998. (Even in 98 most of us who played Halflife played it on a 3d card of some kind, the effect was not the same without one. I myself actually bought a voodoo2 BECAUSE of half life.)

    Duh... Requiem I am talking OpenGL mode here. My PC is P4 1.8Ghz with 700+MB RAM and a GeForce 4 graphics card.

    My normal frame rate is 60 FPS. Enter a room with transparency fog covering the floor that goes down to 30 FPS. Crouch and the fog fills your vision and my FPS is down to 20. Some calcualtions still have to be done by the CPU (whatever graphics mode) transparency is one of them.

    i wouldn´t advise using OpenGL for HL. Its just that there are mods that use it exclusevely (like Tour of duty) wich i can´t get to run since HL says my Geforce 4 can´t use OpenGL ( i tried everything, no go). so stick with D3D please <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I can create the niftiest fog effect you ever did see, and although its rather CPU-intensive, it runs nicely in all modes (except maybe software).

    Over the years I've used sly tricks to make the HL engine do all sorts of things you'd never think it could do... 3-D fire and combustion effects, fog, special lighting effects... how I've managed to do this is my secret, but its possible simply by using a knowlege of the HL engine, Worldcraft, Texturing, and a little ingenuity and artistic sense.

    Some of the maps I've been working on will have these features in some form or another. Then how they're achieved might become obvious.

    All I'm saying (via inane blathering) is that special built-in stuff like env_fog and the PS is not necessary to create awesome effects. Use some imagination.
