Battlelan + Ns

<div class="IPBDescription">Will this even work?</div> I'm sure some of you have heard of BattleLAN. It's a lovely little program that basically simulates a local area network over the internet (<i>there are certainly other programs that do this as well, but this is the one I'm focusing on now</i>).
Me and some friends play a ton of games over BattleLAN (ie: Starcraft, War3, UT, etc). I tried setting up a LAN game earlier in NS for the first time, but had some complications. The game wasn't listed to the others, my comp crapped out when trying to load a LAN game (<i>see below for comp. specs</i>), etc.
<b>My question is - is it even worth it to go through BattleLAN for a small game with a few friends?</b>
If anyone has any tips for getting this to work with HL/NS, let me know!! For example - What ports are used by HL/NS? Is there any programs that work better than BattleLAN for this kind of application?
My other option would be to run a 'public' passworded server (probably the easier choice by far). If that's the case, how does one set up a temporary public server? Sounds like a stupid question, but I tried going that route when the BattleLAN option first gave me trouble. The only hosting option I saw was through LAN.
<i>
essential specs (would this be workable for hosting something like a 5 player + 5 bot game?):
- Athlon 650 (the classic SlotA heat-crankin' beast)
- 256mb PC133
- 64mb (SDR) Radeon 7000
- cable connection (768/512, offpeak)
</i>
Thanks, and Merry Christmas!! <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Bots are resource eaters. You can try it, but you'll probably run thin on CPU and memory.
The default server port for a half-life server is 27015.
I recommend avoiding BattleLAN. You're throwing the overhead of IPX->IP translation into an equation that already has adequate IP support. Just use a passworded server.
mutliplayer->internet game->create game
If you're going to play from the same machine, you'll be stretching the limits of your CPU and RAM (of course, try it. You might be fine). If one of your friends has more horsepower, see if they'll host the game. I don't know offhand what the per-user bandwidth requirement for NS is, but I believe 512kbps should be okay for 4 or 5 remote players.
