Cool! My suggestion would be to draw them up as you think of them, but only release them once per week or so, so you don't run outta ideas too soon. Yeah, definitely keep a core group of characters if you want this to become a serious strip. All good comic strips have characters that the readers can identify with. I would go so far as writing down a personality, traits, and quirks for each character and stick with them ... consistency leads to character development. People will eventually have favorite characters ... will be cool.
