    hmm, I don't actually know the answer, however if your aiming for a playable map, than I would advice against using any sort of train. They tend to lag and jump around the place too much for people on 56k modems.

    Yes, trains work. I haven't made any maps yet, as I'm still just learning the editor, but I successfully made both a regular func_train and a func_tracktrain that worked fine.

    I am thinking of using some func_trains to create some "working" machinery, but I wouldn't be surprised if it lagged too much. If it causes lag problems, I will chop it from my level without thinking twice ... eye candy takes a backseat to playability.

    I would say to reserve trains for eye candy and nothing more. The are WAY too buggy.

    the main lagg problem with trains/track trains/pendulums and other moving brushes is that they <b>are moving</b>, so you may get net lag because of the info updating/synchronizing the status for all players.

    a train that only moves for a short distance once in a while should not cause much lag - it is mostly standing still, like doors.....
