<div class="IPBDescription">Great tool, but...</div> Voice chat is a fantastic tool. It lets us communicate without having to rely on slow typing. But more and more I'm having problems with it.
Marines, aliens, and many structures all make noise. The noises they make are unique and identify themselves by the sounds they make. If you're chatting idly, whining, complaining, or using voice chat excessively, this drowns out the sounds. A player like myself, who has a full 5.1 surround sound setup, can tell who's coming, what direction, and how far off they are by the sound they make. This is a huge tactical advantage I get, and it's lost when someone wants to chat and say hi to their friend who just joined and strike up a conversation.
So the obvious solution is to mute the offenders; but then if they should manage to stop chatting and actually need help, or have something important to say 'X marines moving in on our hive at Y', that's gone.
The solution : Use voice chat for the essentials; in-game teamplay and whatnot, use typing for the non-essentials, saying Hi, chatting, whatnot.

They don't.
Yeah you're right, you cannot switch it on again without restarting. Makes it somewhat less useful...
here is a script for you:
bind "x" "vs0"
alias "vs0" "voice_scale 0; bind 'x' 'vs1'"
alias "vs1" "voice_scale 1; bind 'x' 'vs0'"
Makes "x" toggle voice on and off.

Depends on whether you have 12 year old teammates screeching into the mic or not.
