"update" And Dreaded 30,000 Servers!

<div class="IPBDescription">Why does it go through them all?</div> Greetings, fellow NS addicts and junkies. For several days now--after I read the bad shortcut post regarding the "NS not installed" error message--I have been successfully able to get a list of about 150 servers using the Update button. I was quite pleased that the NS team had the foresight and the know-how to make the Update button only update NS servers, rather than parsing through the entirely unacceptable list of some 30,000 Half-Life servers. This worked for several days. My question revolves around why my Update button in NS now seems to want to go through the whole list, rather than just return the NS servers as it had previously been doing. My filter is set, and has been set since the beginning, to display only servers running NS, those responding in less than 32,000 ms (I like custom maps, and often only high ping servers run them, and a habitual filter setting from CS), dedicated servers only, and servers with people playing. Why does Update parse through all the servers? It didn't use to! Yes, I know about Gametiger and Arcadespy or whatever it's called, and I use them frequently. However, I like the ability to search for servers in-game, but I absolutely will not wait a half hour for that ridiculously long list to be updated. Any ideas why the Update button has changed the way it finds servers? Great mod though. Peace.

I have had the same problem. I've noticed that when the game fails to connect to the 1st master server it queries, I have to wait for the 30000 servers to dload. What I do then is exit the game completely, restart and then the 1st master server answers and I get just the 300 or so NS servers.
I think it has something to do with wether or not I was playing another game before. Or maybe it's my firewall and some weird port triggering that is too slow on the 1st run.
Anyway, exiting and restarting works for me every time.

Kmax, I am glad someone else has experienced my problem and that I am therefore not crazy. I too was wondering if the problem had something to do with not connecting to the main Valve server on the first attempt. I am fairly certain that each time it did not, it began to cycle through <i>all</i> the servers. Unfortunately I have tried exiting and restarting several times, and have never been able to connect to the Valve server on the first attemp on the second restart, as you suggested. However, I will keep this advice in mind, and if it happens again, I will try exiting and restarting to test my success. Thank you for the advice, fellow NS player. Peace.

Sometimes it happens to me, try a different shortcut open it and if it does all 30,000 exit then press the shortcut again, thats what i do and it seems to work for me...

If the master server that you connected to previously is unavaliable, the new master server will send the entire server list to you.

For example, if you got the server list from server 1 yesterday, but you decide to update today when server 1 is down, server 2 will send you the massive 20000+ servers because it thinks that you have none of the servers.
