You can weld structures to repair them or heavy armored marines to repair their armor. You can also weld those grids that have the welding icon on them. You see a bar at the bottom of your screen (like the evolving and researching one). If it becomes full, the grid breaks and you can enter.
The welding symbol:

The only confusing thing to me is that in some cases welding OPENS things and some cases it CLOSES things. So, for instance, in Subspace Hive in ns_nancy, you might try to weld the vent, but DOH YOU JUST OPENED IT MORON.

the weld is not IN the marine start

it is on the other side (lol)

yes

if it is open, welding it will close it, if it is closed, welding it will open it

is most maps (specialy hera) you can generaly tell what a weldpt does b/c it is either directly on the obj or there is a WIRE running frim it to the actual thing

oh and:
Maps + all the welds (this guy kicks bleep)

I thought welding the buttons next to the doors in hera activated those buttons (or the button on the other side of the door in case of the one next to the marine spawn). Never actually tried, only looked at the .bsp.

If you weld switches they will activate, like the gorges spit, or parasite.

why would anyone need a tutorial on welding??

I think this is a mapping error, seems like it should be backwards from how it is now(open from beginning, welding it closes it)... Also the unnamed hive is supposed to be Mother hive.
