and I was wondering if any one was knowledgable about them, I have heard that alot of them ae free (I think I remember some one saying that this one is free, as well as the old boards)

what I am realy wondering about is if there are nice free fourms out there (like these) why do people still use crappy ones that throw adds all over the place?(ProBoards)

They are easy to set up, and more newbie friendly. That's probably the biggest reason. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

hmm, how hard could these boards be to set up?

I understand it is obviously harder then others, but isn't it worth it

basicly most of my confusion came from the fact that ProBoards seemes to be a 'viable' option in peoples minds
thie board is badly designed, popus up an add every time you move from page to page, and they offer you a certain # of 'ad free' page views for like $7(that is the person who pays $7 gets the add free pages), not to mention their just ugly lol

meh, more things to teach myself over winter term (how to set up a forum ;D)

A lot of pages that are on free hosts don't have PHP or ASP capabilities. Many of the good boards, like Invision or PHPBB, need these languages installed on the server, and usually a MySQL database as well. Most people don't know these like they know HTML, and aren't willing to pay a monthly hosting fee for a good server.

vBulletin is by contest the absolute best forum package in the 0 - $100 range. I absolutely love it.

Check it out at my site: <a href='http://www.hastezone.com' target='_blank'>www.hastezone.com</a>

And a forum that makes great use of it on a large scale: <a href='http://www.hardforums.com' target='_blank'>www.hardforums.com</a>

As for a 100% free board, I'd say InvisionBoard is probably the best, followed by phpBB2. But you won't get all the feature rich things that vBulletin offers

The best forum is this one, Invision Board, it is free, and in my experience (a lot of it) better then vBulletin and phpBB.
