This is quite odd...
Ok, quite ineteresting connection problem I have been having:

Last night around 11pm, I came downstairs to find my whole network ripped apart (by my brother, no one else touches it), but I have yet to talk to him why. I plugged it all back together and my internet was dead. Not wanting to lose my 50 images all arranged and works in progress in Photoshop, I didn't want to reboot and loose my 15 mins or organizing my work and some other stuff I had done.

So, I first reset my router, reset the cable modem and gave it a shot. Not a single thing would connect, aftre trying to make IE detect network settings, I gave in and rebooted. Well, now MSN, AIM and Kazaa were working nornally, I could chat, send files, download and all that fun stuff on them. Not a single other program was working, such as IE, ICQ, mIRC, Half-Life and more. So I did another reset of router, reste modem, released/renewed my DHCP on the router, renwed my local IP and reboot again. Same things worked and the others still didn' work. Feeling annoyed, I figured shaw (my ISP) was acting up and went to bed. Next morning after a quick check, nothing was working still.

So, I came home from school today and went off to watch the Oilers lose Anways, coming home I got back into it, the same resetting of stuff just to make sure it wasn't shaw and nothing worked. I then got on my borthers computer (both are connect to a hub, to a router, and then out to the net) so we are on the exact same config, just he is running 98 and I am on XP. His works absolutely fine! Everything connects and runs like a dream! I get back on mine and check to see if my DNS isn't working, and I decide it's not the DNS after pinging some places (no response via DNA or IP). So, I went and upgraded my firmware on my router (after getting a copy from a friend) and that ended up doing nothing at all for me. I did try and go directly to the internet, and it didn't work also. So, I went back and re-ran through my network setup, disabling it, setting static IP's, resetting back to dynamic and everything else I could think of in the TCP/IP settings and not one thing worked. All during this time, my brothers computer has been working and connecting fine.

And some final other notes I thinm might help or not:
- The NS auto-updater did detect that there was a new patch for playtesters, but couldn't download it
- When MSN logged on, it would be able to notify me that 3 new messages had arrived, but IE still wouldnt work

In summary:
- not ISP as my brothers connection works fine
- not router/Hub as brothers connection works fine, and part of mine works (even after firmware upgrade)
- not cables, as I did switch them around to same results
- local settings...something must be wrong, and I have no idea what

If anyone has heard anything like this before, or has any ideas on what I could do, I would appreciate the help!

Run a search looking for a 'hosts' file (no extension). If there is one, slap a txt extension on it, and see if there are any weird entries in there (though I doubt this is the actual problem... I'm just trying stuff as it comes to mind).

Be sure to change it back when you're done.
