At start, get 2 IPs, 1 Observatory, 1 ammo factory.
All marines are guarding base till everything is done, then send half of them towards a hive. Scan all 3 hives prior to moving the marines and confirm alien starting hive. Try to send marines to the hive furthest away from their starting hive.
On the way to the hive, there should be a res node(like if ur going to eclipse, u can place res node at triad), build it, and continue to a hive. Once marines reach hive set up a phase gate, a res tower, a turret factory, and 3 turrets. Phase gates must be built first, res tower and turret factory comes next, whichever one you feel more important. There's a trick to it such that 3 turrets is enough to secure the hive temporarily on all 3 of the hives(this requires personal skill in turret placement).
If you need some idea on turret placement, go to www.planetns.com and look at their strat articles. I believe there's one with a demo included where a guy shows you all his turret placements in eclipse.
So anyway, once the hive is secured. Get a couple more res nodes(like horseshoe and triad alpha), research weapons/armor by sending a few guys to do the job. The others should head to the next hive(usually aliens will start building a hive or saving for it). Don't rush in and attack. Instead build a phase gate, TF, and turrets outside their hive.
For example, if marines are going to computer core hive via eclipse, there's a spot right outside computer core on the left of commander map that you can place a phase gate and TF, and secure that with 2 turrets.
Once that area is secured scan the hive and see if a hive is building. If it is upgrade TF to siege, if it isn't send ur marines inside and setup a TF there when its clear, and secure it. Once you get to this point, the game is pretty much over.
Usually, by the time marines are sent to the 2nd hive to secure, gorges will just get the hive started, so there's enough time to set up a siege before that hive is up.
The only problem I sometimes face is that the TF's are bugged at certain locations on the map, meaning it won't let me upgrade to siege.

The point of an early observatory is to get motion tracking, phase gates and distress beacon - it's not only good for scanner sweeps. I build an observatory right after the first IP.
regardless, an observatory is a must because phase gate is your best friend.
I build the same structs that you do in the base, but on my route to the hive(s), I DO NOT build a res tower, I go straight for the hive and secure it. And when i say secure it, i mean: one portal, rt, and MAYBE (if i feel most nessary) a tf with only 2 or 3 sgs. I will then go back for the res node that i skipped on the way to hive.. I ussualy only send two marines to do that, while the rest are on route to the next hive. If i'm feeling.. peckish... i'll go straight for the throat and take out their main hive. I do not send my marines into the hive head first.. that would be most moronic. I ussualy build a Seige battlement outside of their hive. This base includes a portal, tf, 3 or 4 sgs, and a seige. All common stuff. If this is NOT the main hive, or there is another hive that is now well guarded by now, I will ussual secure the hives that i currently hive, go back and recheck the 1st hive and clame any untapped resorces. I ussualy do not set up any d around these nodes, becuase mostly it takes too much time to do it, when I can ussualy get the nearest marine to go in route to the res node before the skulk takes it out.... if the marine doesnt reach the node or he is unable to defend it, I just recycle it and tip my hat to the skulk. In the mean time however, I an upgrading to motion tracking, building arms lab and upgrading weapons/armor (pretty much in that order). But one thing I always keep in mind: when a marine gets to an important spot, I do not care how many there are, or where the aliens are, I ALWAYS build a portal first. I drop the portal before anything else, and I will not drop anything else untill that portal is built.
Ohh yea... forgot to tell you guys.. i'm different <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->. I call resorce nosels "nodes", turrets "SGs", and phase gates "portals". When i'm a pub and there are people who I dont ussualy play with, they sometimes get confused with my new lingo <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->.
Nodes, portals, turrects are what I use in game.
