Movie help

Hi. I downloaded the Natural Selection gameplay movie, but it won't work on my computer.

First, I downloaded the NS-gameplay.divx movie, then I went to www.divx.com and downloaded DivX 5.0.1. I tried playing it in the DivX player that comes with DivX 5.0.1, but it just sits there, frozen. The hourglass mouse icon shows up and nothing happens. If I Alt+F4 to quit the program, it quits no problem, so it doesn't look like it crashed or anything. It just won't do anything.

Then I tried it on another, faster computer. It had DivX 4 with the Nimo codecs, and it just wouldn't load there. I downloaded DivX 5.0.1 there, and re-installed the Nimo codecs, but still no luck. It just sits there and does absolutely nothing, but it can quit easily.

Next I went back to www.divx.com and downloaded DivX 5.0.1 Pro, since it mentioned the Pro version had more support for other DivX movies. I installed it over the previous 5.0.1 I had downloaded on this first computer, but the same thing happened.

I've seen the screenshots. I've read the news. I want to see the damn game, and this is just annoying. What do I need to do to watch the movie? I searched the forums to see if this had been asked before, but I couldn't find anything.

Thanks.

Try renaming the extension to avi. Sure, DivX says to keep it as divx, but frankly their 'Playa' is crap.

Also, realize the movie is MONTHS old, and the game looks tons better.

Varlock3D, if youre that interested in the game, your next best bet is to download the Technology release. With a bit of fiddling you can run around and pretend youre in the game. <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

No, "The Playa" isn't crap, the codec system on Windows is crap.  Sometimes things work, sometimes they don't.

Definitely rename the movie to .avi (and in general, rename a non-working .avi to .divx) and try that.  Try both Windows Media Player and The Playa.  One of them will probably work.  If not, sorry, try searching online.  It's a problem with the underlying technology, nothing we can fix.
