How about jumping on boxes/crates (take the high-grounds) I know, the firing-angle gets worse, but then the skulks can't just rush at you, they'll need to climb on the box before they can try to have you for lunch. Or is that a bad plan? Since the aliens (skulks) can't jump very high, they'll have to:
A) get to the crate B) face up to climb it C) face back to the marine so he can orientate and start chewing
Maybe u can even get a marine in front of the box, then the skulks will have a real hard time getting to you, cause they have 2 guns pointing at them, and no shooting in your buddy's head.
Crouching isn't something I'd suggest in a mele situation, its what I suggest you do to improve your accuracy against skulks running at you while they're on the same floor. Generally as they reach mele I jump and the 'nock back' effect is very usefull if you know how to use it as they litrally fly into your sights .
I've heard about marines strafe jumping sideways around the attack, going to have to learn to do that sometime.
J2pc: good point totally forgot about boxes and the like although I use them myself (and guess everybody has at some point gone 'wee I'll hide up THERE').
Its a toughie, my general philosophy is kill them all befor they reach you, however sometimes when your on your own you need the extra few seconds that sitting on a crate and leaping off when they get up there with you buys..
Guess it depends on too many variables to say it as a hard and fast rule but definatly something worth thinking about. It probably depends on how accurate you know you can be with the skulks. If your aim is highly accurate under all situations then it makes sence, if you're having trouble hitting the ones that run streight at you you might wana try the floor .

It can buy you valuable time.
Any opinions?
