Are Mines Of Any Use Early-game..

<div class="IPBDescription">..against non-newbie skulks?</div> In a great many threads on this board, people shoot down mining tactics because "they won't slow down a good skulk".

What do you all think? I am talking about cooridors into bases and hives taken early-on - are they worth mining? if so, how (in detail)?

    Mines are an excellent anti skulk/gorge weapon. Too bad they are underused. When asking for them, i'm always ignored (almost always), or when commenting on their power while playing Kharaa, I get called a n00b. Mines are also good mid game against fades, as long as they are landmines. Tripmines might deterr fearful skulks, but landmines will kill even some of the best players.. I bet those skulks will use the walls more now, eh?

    Personally I'd only consider mines worth using to 'seal' vents, if the vent is small enough you can make it impossible to pass a single mine, that means you can place 5 mines in a row and the skulks will have to suiside into the mines 5 times to clean them off (assuming they're disorganized thats a LONG time, even if they're not disorganized they're gonna waste a long time in skulk hours to clean em).

    Otherwise the mines cost almost the same as a wealder, with a good team they'll never lose the wealder and it can keep your structures far safer (especially if your marines know wtf they're doing covering a room, more on that in a post on its way).

    Specific situations are: vents in NS_Hera main base (they're a swine to cover), vents in the satalite hive in NS_Tanith, vents outside base at the 1st res point in um. 'the one with the messhall' (NS_Nancy?).

    I have almost no one ever ask for mines. The few times they do seems to be when the aliens have fades...doesn't work so well. Nothing is more amusing when I am a fade...except setting off mines and killing marines with the mine. Always funny. However whenever someone does ask for a mine I will drop them if they like to...and can use them effectivly.

    Mines are great... if the people you give them to as commander know how to place them.

    I find that they are most effective placed on the ground, so the red beam doesn't show and they will even catch careless good players.

    Since many skulks like to have a good nibble around the command console and turret factories, its quite fun to place a few (on the ground) around those structures as a secondary defence.

    Its quite good to place a few around the base in the early game on the ground, as the skulks rush in and begin running around, they're bound to trigger a few, and if they get caught they'll be more cautious the second time around, slowing down their attacks.

    A marine before he has to build a structure, can place one mine in orbit around the structure he is building, as he is building, he can circle around the structure passing the mine now and then, should he be attacked, the skulk may follow him around the unbuilt structure and trigger the mine. The marine may die aswell, but better than a dead marine AND an eaten structure.

    I believe mines are most effective when placed on the ground and in dark places or around corners, then they are hard to spot, and many good players will blunder into them. Its best not to bunch them up, keep them spread out, and randomly placed, that way you don't waste mines by domino effect, and they will get more kills.

    The best place for a mine is on the floor between a wall and a resource tower, thats the place that most skulks tend to go for protection from turrets and often left unguarded. For some reason, I get lots of mine kills in that area.

    Don't bother spamming loads of mines on the wall, if I am a skulk, and I see lots of mines on the wall, I'll just walk into them and commit suicide, knowing that I've wiped out a whole minefield with just one life; thats a really good bargain.

    So drop a few mines around you before you begin building, especially if you are a lone marine, it could keep your structures safe.

    Say is it a good idea to stack proxy mines? I mean will one proxy mine effectively kill a single skulk if they run over it, or would it be wiser to have like two or three on the same spot given they don't show up stacked on one another? Oh if they are stacked do they all do damage or is it just one?

    Yeah, but all FF is 33%, so it's not really noticable. Mines are the most underused weapon, and it's one of the best, i strongly suggest you guys start using them more, at times, there much better then spending resources on a turret factory and turrets.

    Mines are a great defense in ns_nothing when you're trying to clamp down Cargo Bay Foyer. Place a couple of mines(well-spaced) in the ventilation shaft leading into Cargo, and you've got yourself a very useful skulk killer.

    I've seen marine teams that are about to lose put up so many mines that the server crashes.

    That's about the only time I've seen them used.

    Sometimes, when I command, or if the cc is free, I quickly sneak in, drop a few mines for myself and place them myself.     Can you place mines on the ceiling? I tried a couple of times but they kept blowing up.
