Do monsters respawn?

There's been something nagging at the back of my mind for a long time now that I haven't seen a clear answer to...
Once long ago, fish would not respawn. Just by trying to keep up with dwindling hunger/thirst you could depopulate regions and you'd be forced to move out to find more, or switch to the fruits and veggies from the Floater Island (Why doesn't the Mountain Island have any edibles on it? Hmm...)
After a while it was updated so the fish would respawn after a period of time.
However, it didn't clarify if the hostile fauna also were included in this update or if it's just the prey animals. If you rammed a stalker it'd just sit there flailing, and given enough effort you could clear that kelp forest of stalkers, mesmers, and so on.
Will Stalkers, Mesmers, bone sharks... Sea Dragons... Ever be respawned by the game if you were to defeat them, or is it up to you to do so with eggs you find and hatch?

2. I can concur that Bonesharks do respawn. At least, I'm pretty sure. I remember taking my PRAWN, and going around murdering all the Infected creatures in a feeble attempt to stop the disease. Anyway, I killed multiple Bonesharks in the Underwater Islands in a small area. And then, about two days later, I found that pack while going through the area, and one of them was infected.
This proves that some creatures respawn, and that killing everything is not a useful methods of curing infection.
THE MORE YOU KNOW
I'll admit, I completely forgot about the Bulbo Trees xD
The Underwater Islands are absolutely swarming with those guys (As is the new Mnt-LR connection, FML xD) so it might also have been one of the nearby bonesharks patrolling over there, but that's hopeful info there.
Yeaaah someone should have told the Warpers that xD
Aaah mentioning the eggs though made me recall seeing my Stalker actually behave himself after I released one. THey used to simply pop back into full size and turn aggressive, then a few stable updates later he remained at his current size and continued to be friendly towards me but hostile towards other fauna (And my seamoth ). Back then I heard conflicting thoughts on that - some said they shouldnt be passive when released others said they should. Personally, I love that they're passive (Though I haven't tried with the current update) since it'd make sense as you raised them. You're their parent. I love having them around, and I'd adore if you could have them follow you (Or have them carry you around like a living seaglide, omg. I'd love to do that with a Stalker or Boneshark! Or a Sea Dragon but not getting my hopes too high here haha)
If they're killable but don't respawn then that doesn't make much sense to be honest, since it'd just encourage attacking them so you can permanently remove a threat from an area. However if that is indeed the case, then I'll just make sure to be careful not to harm the Sea Dragon since it'd be a crime shame to see that place without the guy swimming around.
If it were me I'd just make the Sea Dragons unkillable. Knock 'em out maybe, but unkillable. (My finding them absolutely adorable has nothing to do with that, I swear)
As for the highlighted parts... I sincerely hope that's just backlogged stuff rather than abandoned ideas. Originally the Lost River was planned to snake out across the map, and I loved that thought. the LR probably proved to be too resource and time consuming to implement as it was, let alone carving out an entire network of caves for it AND giving them all the same level of loving detail. So, seeing them actually add in the Mountains entrance was beyond amazing to me. The Mushroom Forest likely won't ever get an entrance but I'd be curious to see how it'd have been implemented though...
Back on topic though, it's likely that this mechanic would have been comparable to the watering down the Lost River. That is, it was too large of an undertaking to complete in a reasonable amount of time, so decided to stick with what would work best for the short term. Even without ecosystem mechanics, the game is very playable. It'd be cool to see them in, but it's not harming the core game without it. It'd be cool to see the Lost River snake across the entire map, and explore mysterious openings into interconnecting regions, but the core game is doing fine without them.
It's possible they found some spare time to carve out that Mountains entrance so worked on that and got it in now rather than adding it in post-1.0. My guess is that things like this are still something that can be added in after the game's finished, since they're not crucial to the experience but do add to it.
As far as I know, the leviathans of Reaper size and larger are the only life tracked in the environment outside the rendered bubble around the player. So if you swim off and then swim back, fauna should be respawned. And in practice I've only seen fauna cut down when I stay in one place. May be different for flora, but I'm sure commonly harvested things like Table Coral and Acid Mushrooms eventually respawn. I've seen outcroppings slowly respawn for a while so I'm sure life does too.
And at least in Experimental, there's a lot of beasties. You will always be running into them, even Stalkers in the Safe Shallows. And groups of 2 to 3 or more. Including damn Bleeders and Biters anywhere near their biomes.
It does from the perspective of reality.
A fish that size would take a very long time to grow to maturity and they are relatively few in number so it's not likely that another would just randomly swim along to take its place - which is what I'd assume is happening with other fauna replacements.
I never mentioned reality though, just from a gameplay perspective. If a leviathan is killable but doesn't respawn, that'd encourage taking them out so you can be free of worry in that area. The only thing keeping the player from wanting to extend that to every living predator in the ocean would possibly be "Because then it'd be boring"
A leviathan respawning after say 3 ~ 7 in-game days (as an example) would mean that killing it would be pointless: It's just going to come back later, so you're going to have to deal with it in a less violent way and find methods of getting past it without drawing its ire.
This thread is only a day old though? Unless you mean the topic itself in which case I apologize for making the thread in the first place
Have trouble telling time much?
That made me think.... Did I post a thread like this already some time in the past?
Makes me wonder... Though there was also a point where people were talking about if resource nodes respawned, and some people said "Yes" others said "No" and others yet said "Must be a bug"
If they respawn then great, that's one less incentive to go ramming everything with your vehicles; it'd be wasted time on your part. Though that also means one less reason to collect and hatch creature eggs...
I always assumed the creature eggs were there partially so you had the means to repopulate an area should the worst happen, and sometimes I'd do that to mess with the ecosystem (I'm such a terrible person sometimes). I'd put Stalkers in areas they shouldn't be xD I did try putting Bonesharks into the Grand Reef at one point, though I found them all on the surface when I came back later. Alive, they were alive. They were just.... Patroling up on the surface for some reason. Come to think of it, Stalkers did that too. After a while they'd start swimming in circles while slowly ascending to the surface, only breaking off this behavior when attacked or when approached. That was a long time ago though, pretty sure it's been fixed by now.
...I really want hatched monsters to be friendly to me ;v;
@Rezca I think they are now, or at least I saw someone say so in a recent thread. Something about having your own pack of eternally tame Stalkers to get teeth from. Let them out near your base, throw down some scrap for them to play with and boom, teeth forever. Haven't tried it yet myself.
So far my only experience with this since the Silent Running update (Which is about where I dropped offline in attempt to keep new stuff a surprise) was when I was streaming the game for a friend a few nights back. After spending a full hour and a half trying to make it to the Empreror which included several restarts and numerous bugs, I popped over to the Dunes to make a little base to show her how you can hatch and raise your own Boneshark (A monster she's in love with)
I released one of my Stalkers and it promptly swam over and bit me. It eventually joined my boneshark in harassing a nearby sandshark afterwards.
If that's a bug and not intended behavior, I wouldn't be surprised after the comedy of errors that day had been
When they hatch in the aquarium just click on them like you would when catching a Peeper out in the open. They're added to your inventory and after that you can drop them out in the waters.
I remember early on, this would make them immediately return to full natural size as well as reverting to their default AI (Which generally meant promptly trying to kill you, despite being perfectly okay with your presence - as well as being smol and cute - just minutes earlier) Now it seems that they retain their current size.... But still try and kill you. Guess they were happy in their little aquarium haha
Not sure if you can pick them back up again after placing them in the open ocean, but I kinda doubt it.
@Rezca Ahahahahahahahhah--- ahem, I mean, wow what a pain. c.c
It was probably a love nibble?
