Grrr! A New Trend, Teams Giving Up

Grrr. This is really annoying me. I'd say at least 50% of the games I've played in today ended one of two ways. Either the entire other team goes to the ready room, or the commander recycles the entire base.

My last 4 games went like this.

ns_bast: Commander hops out of the chair, asks if anyone else wants it while aliens have 2 hives. Person hops in, and recycles all of our base.

ns_eclipse: The instant we retake the third hive, the command recycles all turret factories and spawn portals.

ns_hera: While we have just two hives, but destroy their stuff in holoroom, the entire teams presses f4 and goes to the ready room, ending the game.

ns_hera: The instant we get fades and begin attacking their base, without having EITHER hive secured or the third hive anywhere near started, the commander recycles all spawn portals and turret factories. We only had 2 fades hitting their base, and it was in good shape with their entire team there. They could have easily pushed us back.

Every day more games end in teams giving up. Teams decide they have no chance, and just give up. There is no sportsmanship, no losing gracefully. No one seems to even try to come back in very possible situations! The instant you begin to lose, everyone wants to just end the game.

What is the point of playing a game where you never actually win?

Has anyone else noticed this?

Fight to the bitter end, I say!
    Never give up, never surrender.
Die with honor and take down as many enemies possible while doing it.

I kind of like the endgame where the aliens siege your base with spores and bilebombs and you just rush out to try to kill a fade or a lerk.

The only thing annoying me is when I see only fades attacking the marine main base and you constantly rush out to kill them. Where are the lerks with umbra? Where are the webbing gorges? And if the aliens don't have enough resources to evolve, where are the exploding dogs?

There does come a time when you really can't win.... but it's waaaaaay later then most people (that I've played with) think it is. However, it requires that teamwork thing and changing of (obviously not working) tactics and strategy and people seem to find that hard.

I like the idea, but I also despise it most of the time. It's good when the whole alien team is actually winning, and destroying our base, so I usually say "press f4" because I don't want to prolong it when we can just start a new one. I mean, yay, you won, now let's play another.

But I also hate it because people give it WAY too easily, even the SLIGHTEST inch of loss, they say press f4. I'm usually the one to say, "crap we lose" a lot, but I never say F4 unless I'm ABSOLUTELY sure that we have NO WAY in hell at winning. (bogus teams, or crappy players, or uncoordinated).

Anyway, that's the gist of it.

There is no more "fighting to the bitter end". Once aliens grab that third hive, it's nearly impossible, but possible although very slim, to re-take the map. Now that Bilebomb and Xenocide is fixed, any marine defense is easily destroyed in a matter of seconds. As a fade on ns_caged, my teammates were using acid rocket still while I used bilebomb, and I rocked up all the kills, and destroyed almost the entire base. Bile bomb rocks now. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

yesterday i played on a game and the aliens got their 3 hives... we had almost no chance.
but i took a jetpack and a hmg and i got near one hive. the com was with me and he build a turret factory and 2 siege cannons in a vent (jetpack allowed me to get in). Some time after, the hive was completely destroyed, and the wall of lame too.
    *never* give up.

Ppl leave not only because they dont want to lose but also because they dont want to spend a hour and a half* getting raped just so they can say they stuck it out.

But that hour and a half about be spent into winning, 3 hive's dose't mean marine death (it dose't help tho) I'v made MANY come backs. Infact almost all the games i'v won(or been on a winning team) Is AFTER they get 3 hives (due to quick building or in small games i don't have the man power to cover the 3rd hive and dam fades rape my senterys)

Wow, that explains why 3 of us got to base and there was nothing left and we were saying no way did they take all this stuff out. Im so stupid never thought the darn CC recycled the place.

    That sux.

I do get people to F4, when marines or aliens kill everything and spawn camp, IE, leaving only the 1 Hive, or 1 INF portal and camp it.

But otherwise even with 9 vs 4 and losing bad, I will stick it out till end, unless the other side is just taking way to long to give us the deathstroke.

I don't mind losing when i'v a fighting chance. I do mind fighting a battle which i know for sure i lost already.
What i don't understand is why some people like a fight where the other team has no chance whatsoever.

Actually, the funniest thing is when you don't give up, and you keep fighting even though you have only LMGs, no upgrades, and no motion tracker (A side effect of having a newb commander and not having anyone smart enough to boot him), and the alien team decides to have some fun, 30 minutes and many deaths to offense chambers later, a total of 7 Onos come into your base. lol.

If any of you have played a competitive RTS match, you'd know that resigning is actually an honorable thing to do. I always like to fight to the bitter end, though.

Last night at around 8:50 PM on ns_bast, my Alien team took and secured the final hive. I said "24 is coming on in 10 minutes, lets hurry up and end this."

An hour later, after I get back from watching 24, the Marines are STILL inside their base, holding the Aliens off. Yes the Aliens werent organized, but still thats a long time to survive when locked inside your base with Fades and Onos attacking you. They made NUMEROUS valient pushes. They even got a teleporter and Siege inside the Port Engine Room Hive before we could take them out. They were really close to turning things around, if just one engagement had gone the other way, they could have really hurt us.

About 20 minutes later, we organized a group of Onos, and finished off the base. The Marines didn't feel like they lost, they felt like they won for holding us back for an hour and 20 minutes. Thats the fun of this game, not "ok we can't win, lets quit".

You know,i do self destruct the base is instances when its kinda clear the lmg marines cant do crap against onos......

Oh yea on hera a few days back, the alien team was just sitting at the spawn portals spawn killing the marines to boost their score,i recycled the portals, killed myself and the alien team kept bitching about how lame i was -.-

I think the reason people quit on the marine team as soon as fades appear is because fades rule out deathmatch style play. The sheer difficulty of getting a bunch of strangers to attack in a tight group (on some public servers) means that an uncoordinated marine team will probably loose the game.
Having said this when you have slightly more teamwork on the marine team it is a great feeling to take there second hive:), and have it all downhill from then on.

The single time i left a server when fades appeared was yesterday. About four fades were seriously acid rocketing our base with great teamwork in the refinery hive. I tryed to defend it but without armour and backup in ones and twos we were toast. It was impossible to rally the entire team to attack at once, which was what was needed. When we lost that base i left.

I hate how quick folks will give up too. A lot of it comes from inexperienced marines freaking out when they see Fades. Come on Marines... they aren't THAT scary. That said... I've played long enough to know when I'm going to lose. You can often tell by the caliber of the players on the other side vs. the caliber of your own. The other day I was commanding a team of 3 marines (4 including me) and even when I had them all grouped together with a weapon and armor upgrade completed, they would STILL get owned by a single Skulk. I stuck it out until they Fade rushed our main base 20 minutes later just to be a good sport, but I knew we were going to lose after I lost the entire marine squad to a single Skulk for the third time in a row. I'm sure the aliens had fun shooting fish in a barrel though. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

PJ-, 24 is the best show ever. Besides that, I was on Misfires, the aliens had 2 hives and cleared our base, but hey look at that we still have sub space, we rebuild subspace with a CC and spawns the whole deal. Then we brought the carnage, Grar and I went vent rapin. Grenade Launchers jet packs, good bye No name hive(this is being on nancy). We also killed port engine earlier with HMG's but they rebuilt that.

Later in the game, they took over subspace totally, but, we had a disrtress beacon, HellBilly, Grar, Argon the Pirate, Grim, Baki, others, and I all died running out of the base on purpose, HellBilly hits the distress beacon and as you should know, the distress beacon will spawn you at MAIN base *grin*. We take over our base, they had a nozzle 3 o chambers, all gone in a matter of 30 seconds. We built another CC on the roof in the **obscenity** pit.

End result we lost but it was a lot of fun, nancy is on the most balanced maps <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo-->

i only give up when we have no defences in base and theres a fade onos party going on inside

if you live a couple of secs after respawning you can hit f4 with a clean consience

i dont mind loosing, its the waiting for the wentcamper or similar that gets me

if you are alone on marines and no comm since cc is destroyed there isnt much you can do so i f4 out to allow the other on my team to play more and wait less

    *NEVER* give up.

One of my favorite things to do is slowly but surely build a new base somewhere on the map, where aliens don't go that often. Its funny to watch the aliens destory your main base while you are safe and secure in another CC across the map, and then all the "WTF!" when they destroy the IPs but my marines are still respawning <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

if my comm's a complete nutjob, and I get the comm well after they have 2 hives and us tied into our base with simple OFFENSIVE turrets, there's no chance I can capture that third hive with that comm (now marine) as an ally. I can try sieges, but the marines have to be smart enough to build the factory again.. *SIGH* By then the third hive is well on its way and I don't even have an arms lab.. would you give up? (think about it, the aliens kill you in 2, almost 1 hit)
  • Deltron_ZDeltron_Z Join Date: 2002-11-05 Member: 6971Members
When all you have left is your structures in base and no resources, there's no point in playing if 5 onos are rampaging around and lerks are gasing the whole base. Just end it.

But I do agree, alot of teams give up way too early.

dumbo, i like your idea but it has to be modified, as it does not work when the only base marines are holding onto is in the hive.

" dumbo, i like your idea but it has to be modified, as it does not work when the only base marines are holding onto is in the hive. "

Yep, you got me with that one.

"if marines turtle in a hive ...." - kindof hard to define this in computer logic <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->.

I suppose you *could* add another check:
    - *if* the marines hold 1 or fewer resource collectors, and few resources.
    - AND the aliens have 2 hives.
    - then a vote starts on whether the marines should start the timer....
    -> the timer starts.

[but this is a hack, and I don't like it.]

[edit: version 2.0, 99% simpler, 99% worse for marines]

If >70% of marines vote for this:
    "evacuate atmosphere"

    Effects:
    - starts timer
    - redirects most of the ships power, preventing the construction/replacement of structures by the marines.
    - marines *will* die when the timer runs out - there is absolutely no chance of a marine win.
    - turns off the biofilters, allowing the kharaa to construct a thrid hive 'anywhere'. [maybe allow a 'second hive' to be constructed inside an existing hive?]

IMHO, that is a large enough penalty to make the marines think twice about triggering it.

    Voting is in ... sorta.
You go to readyroom to vote to quit though and so while you're voting, your team is losing WORSE then before. =(

When one team has a 5 player advantage, it ends the game.

Four games I was in last night.

First game, we lost our CC. At the last second before the CC went down, our commander dropped a chair where we were outside of the Aliens first and only hive. We got two spawns up, an ammo station, and the entire team charged the hive. They were all busy munching on our base, and we killed their Hive, winning the game.

Second game. The aliens had two hives on ns_nancy. We setup a teleporter outside of the Port Engine Room, and entered into at sustained battle of at least 10 minutes. Marines with no upgrades, LA LMG against fades. After 10 minutes of battling, everyone on both teams in that tiny room while our Siege cannons were firering, we took the Hive, and won the game.

Later, on ns_hera, we had two games in which the Marines recycled their spawns the SECOND we took the second hive. I mean within 60 seconds.

Anything can happen guys, don't give up.

Do you suggest that Flay come up with some sort of code that locks you to the game until your team either wins or loses? You can't escape out of the game, you can't turn off your monitor, you can't even turn off your computer until the game ends! Maybe Flay could come up with a code where if you TRY to leave Flay's hand comes out of the monitor and slaps your upside the head!
